Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua 2 fight results, highlights: Ukrainian champion retains titles by decision

Were there any doubt that Oleksandr Usyk were truly the better man when he defeated Anthony Joshua in their first meeting, the Ukrainian erased them on Saturday in Saudi Arabia. Usyk won the rematch to remain WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight champion inside the Jeddah Superdome after 12 hard-fought rounds by split decision in a fight where there was truly no doubt he deserved to be named the victor.

Joshua showed that he had made some real adjustments since their September 2021 clash, fighting in a lower stance and not falling into Usyk's traps in the opening rounds. That made it difficult for Usyk to truly get rolling early as he maintained his constant lateral movement, but without the same offensive openings presenting themselves as they had in the first meeting.

Usyk began to switch up his gameplan beginning in Round 4 as he began to figure out the approach Joshua was taking. Rather than allow Joshua to lead the fight and apply pressure, Usyk began to circle more and fire off combinations with the intention to touch Joshua more than hurt him with any one shot. In response to Usyk's adjustment, Joshua began to fall into the same traps as the first meeting, chasing Usyk and missing wildly at times.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for Usyk, however, as Joshua made a big adjustment of his own, focusing his offense on Usyk's body. A steady diet of hooks and uppercuts to the torso slowed Usyk's movement and opened up the head.

This led to Joshua's biggest moment in the fight -- and the most likely chance for him to have scored a stoppage. In Round 9, Joshua battered Usyk around the ring, seemingly stunning the champion multiple times throughout the frame.

Usyk stayed on his feet, however, and showed true championship qualities in the final three rounds of the fight. Beginning in Round 10, Usyk upped his output considerably, tagging Joshua with heavy shots multiple times. Joshua's lower stance disappeared and he began to fight with very straight, slow legs as Usyk took over and ensured a well-deserved victory.

The official scorecards after the fight read 115-113 and 116-112 for Usyk with one 115-113 card inexplicably turned in for Joshua.

After retaining three of the four recognized world heavyweight championships, Usyk was asked the obvious question of whether he intended to look to become the undisputed champion by going after the WBC belt currently held by Tyson Fury. Fury has repeatedly claimed he has retired from boxing, though many believe he could be coaxed back to the ring with the promise of an undisputed title fight.

"I'm sure that Tyson Fury is not retired yet," Usyk said during his post-fight interview. "I'm convinced that Tyson wants to fight me and I want to fight him. If I'm not fighting him, I'm not fighting at all. Only God knows whether I will or not."

Oleksandr Usyk (c) vs. Anthony Joshua -- Round 12: Joshua likely needed a knockout coming into the round, though boxing scorecards are anything but a certainty. Joshua landed to the body and landed a right hand upstairs. Usyk began to fire back and landed several clean punches. Again, Joshua launched in and got countered but then landed a good left hand. Joshua began trying to clinch and rough up Usyk but it was mostly Usyk landing the shots even as Joshua had a few moments with right hands. Usyk landed another two-punch combination as Joshua was falling all over the ring trying to make anything happen. Unofficial scorecards: 10-9 Usyk (116-112 Usyk)

Oleksandr Usyk (c) vs. Anthony Joshua -- Round 1: Usyk opened with a steady diet of pawing jabs. Joshua fired a jab at the chest, trying to find the spot that will be there despite Usyk's head movement. Joshua also landed a solid jab of his own. Usyk stuck his own jab that landed. Usyk threw a left hand that missed and Joshua landed to the body. Usyk then landed the left hand and a sharp up-jab. A close round ends with an Usyk left hand that may have been enough to nab the round. Unofficial scorecard: 10-9 Usyk

Fighter introductions are taking place now. Can Usyk do it again or will Joshua get revenge and capture world titles for the third time in his career?

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 12: Hrgovic landed some good right hands as Zhang didn't seem ready to let his hands go. Hrgovic unloaded against the ropes, seeming to feel he wasn't in danger of Zhang returning fire in any meaningful way. Hrgovic continued to land throughout the round, moving around and looping shots around Zhang's guard to the final bell.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 11: Hrgovic continued getting off good combinations and Zhang looked increasingly winded after throwing any meaningful shot. Hrgovic also continued to go downstairs, landing to the right and left side of Zhang's body Both men landed heavy rights and then another clean right that buzzed Hrgovic. Hrgovic gathered himself and landed a right hand as Zhang went to the canvas but it was ruled a slip because of the slick logo in the middle of the ring.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 10: Both men landed good hooks to open the round. Hrgovic was doing the better job of getting his punches off in the round, rebounding well from the disaster of Round 9. Zhang also looked fatigued and like it was harder to get his punches off as Hrgovic flurried. Zhang did land one good left hand late but overall, a tremendous round for Hrgovic.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 9: A break in the action is called because both fighters slipped on the mid-ring logo. Zhang came on late in the round with a brilliant combination inside, working short hooks and uppercuts and Hrgovic did not react well, seemingly close to going down. Zhang landed another right and Hrgovic did not look right at all after, sort of stumbling away as the round ended.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 8: Hrgovic has started to throw more combinations now and that is forcing Zhang to adjust to openings coming less frequently. With that, Hrgovic has grabbed back control of the fight by landing a lot of heavy shots and snapping Zhang's head back repeatedly.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 7: Zhang landed some big counter left hands, just cracking Hrgovic whenever Hrgovic tried to let his hands go. Hrgovic landed a big left hand that caught Zhang's attention as he really turned things around in the frame, landing many more shots than he had been while also getting hit far less. Hrgovic ended the round with a strong flurry of shots.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 6: Zhang, despite looking tired, continued to land some big shots and Hrgovic started looking genuinely hurt by the blows. Zhang dropped his hands and went very loose as he blasted away. Hrgovic is in trouble here.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Zhilei Zhang -- Round 5: Zhang looked to be breathing a bit heavier in the round and Hrgovic went to the body several times in the round. After good work from Hrgovic throughout the round, he got badly stunned by two big shots from Zhang before the bell.
