NBA free agency rumors, signings, trade news: Kyrie Irving, Draymond Green stay put, Fred VanVleet on the move

NBA free agency is here. Players and teams officially could start negotiating and agreeing to deals after 6 p.m. ET on Friday, and multiple All-Stars signed new contracts in the opening hours. All of those big names are staying put, however. Kyrie Irving (Mavericks), Khris Middleton (Bucks), Draymond Green (Warriors), Jerami Grant (Trail Blazers) and Kyle Kumza (Wizards) all reportedly agreed to new deals worth $100 million or more on Friday evening, all doing where they finished the 2022-23 season.

Irving, the No. 1 free agent in CBS Sports' top 30, is getting a $126 million deal and the third and final year of the contract is reportedly a player option. Grant has secured the biggest deal of free agency so far in terms of total money, with Portland giving him $162 million over five years. Brooklyn's Cam Johnson also got a deal worth nine figures as he reportedly re-signed with the Nets for four years and $108 million.

Fred VanVleet was one of the biggest names to change teams in this free agency period. The ex-Toronto Raptor is heading to Houston on a three-year, $130 million deal to join the Rockets.

Here's a look at the biggest free agent deals so far:

NBA free agency notable deals

There is one player who is shockingly not a free agent. James Harden made the most stunning move of the offseason to date when he opted into his player option for the 2023-24 season on Thursday. The move comes with the 76ers trying to move the veteran star in a trade after the sides were apparently not seeing eye-to-eye about a potential new contract. Like Kevin Durant's bombshell trade request one year ago, the Harden domino will certainly impact the rest of NBA free agency and the Clippers among others are interested in landing him.

The Warriors traded away Jordan Poole last week and Green, who has won four titles with the organization, is not going anywhere.

We are underway

NBA free agency has officially started. Let the agreements begin.

Done Draymond deal?

Draymond Green returning to the Warriors would not be a surprise. And it looks like that is going to happen. Marc Stein indicates Green plans to sign a four-year, $100M deal to stay with Golden State in free agency.

15 minutes to go

Free agency officially starts in 15 minutes. And it looks like we could have a busy first few minutes.

Suns change some plans

You can add one more name to free agency as the Suns are reportedly not planning to bring Jock Landale back.

Latest on Maxey

The 76ers have a busy few days (weeks?) ahead as they try to figure their James Harden exit. But one thing reportedly not on Philly's radar this summer? That would be a Tyrese Maxey extension. The team is not planning to extend the emerging star guard, per reports, in an effort to maintain flexibility. Sam Quinn lays out why this could come back to bite them.

Latest on Kyrie Irving

CBS Sports' Bill Reiter has the latest on Kyrie Irving as the star guard is set to meet with a handful of teams when free agency kicks off. Irving will speak with the Heat, Rockets, Lakers and Clippers in addition to the Mavericks and the Suns.

Nets trading Joe Harris to Pistons for two second-round picks

Donte DiVincenzo expected to sign with Knicks

DiVincenzo is expected to team up with former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart in New York once free agency opens, per Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer. Despite Golden State's interest in bringing him back, DiVincenzo is reportedly expected to command more money than what the Warriors are able to offer.

Clippers making Ivica Zubac available in trade talks

As L.A. potentially gears up for a trade package to land James Harden from the Sixers, the team is looking at ways to tidy up their salary sheet for the long term, per Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer. One way of doing that may involve trading starting center Zubac, who is owed $22.6 million over the next two years. At 26 years old Zubac could become a hot commodity on the trade market in the coming days, as he's a strong rebounder, good defender and one of the most durable bigs in the league.

Bulls a potential trade partner for Harden

James Harden's shocking decision to opt-in and request a trade from the Sixers will greatly impact the landscape of free agency, and while the Clippers are rumored to be the favorites to land him, there's other teams to keep an eye out. Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer reports that the Bulls could be a trade partner for Philly, with either Zach LaVine or DeMar DeRozan going back to the Sixers. The Bulls have reportedly made both All-Stars available on the trade market in an effort to improve the roster, and adding Harden would solve the team's need for a starting point guard. We'll have to see if the Bulls try and swing for the fences in hopes of making this roster competitive for next season.

Pacers eyeing Toppin

The Pacers are interested in Knicks forward Obi Toppin, Marc Stein reports.

Toppin has spent the first three seasons of his career with the Knicks after being taken eighth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. He averaged 7.4 points per game on 44.6% shooting last season.
