Atletico Madrid eliminate Inter after penalty shootout; Borussia Dortmund advance to Champions League quarters

Borussia Dortmund became the latest teams to book their berths in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday with a dramatic 2-0 win over PSV, while Atletico Madrid came back from behind to send their tie against Inter to extra time and then penalties after the tie was all square after 120 minutes.

Wednesday's scores

  • Atletico Madrid 2, Inter 1 (teams are tied 2-2 on aggregate, Atleti advance 3-2 on penalties)
  • Borussia Dortmund 2, PSV 0 (Dortmund win 3-1 on aggregate)

Sancho scores for Dortmund

Dortmund's third minute goal from Jadon Sancho kicked off a big win for the Germans, who are now off to the quarterfinals. Ian Maatsen's cross was bounced out of the penalty area but eventually landed at Julian Brandt's feet, who then sent the ball to Sancho for a cool finish from just outside the area.

The two sides played a competitive and fairly even match full of chances for each, including several clear cut opportunities for PSV to level the score. Luuk de Jong looked to send the game to extra time in the 95th minute but sent his shot well over the bar, and Marco Reus responded just moments later by scoring on the other end and officially sending his team through to their first spot in the last eight in three years.

Atleti advance on penalties

A night that started well for Inter slowly dissolved as Atleti advance to the quarterfinals on penalties. The hosts were searching for a goal from the start but it was Inter who scored first through Federico Dimarco in the 33rd minute, but Antoine Griezmann equalized two minutes later to keep his side alive.

The game remained open throughout the second half and it was Atleti who were able to score again, courtesy of a goal from Memphis Depay in the 87th minute to send the game to extra time. Both sides continued to search for a go-ahead goal to no avail and so a penalty shootout beckoned that Atleti went on to win 3-2.

Arsenal's penalty excellence

Arsenal reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in 14 years yesterday, but did so in dramatic fashion -- a penalty shootout. A hard-fought 120 minutes against Porto preceded the shootout, and it was a match in which the Gunners were able to show a gritty ability to win ugly. Here's James Benge on how they managed to succeed despite Porto's strict defensive set-up.

  • Benge: "The home side had to scratch out every yard of turf they found but they did exactly that, registering 44 touches in the attacking penalty area to Porto's 18. All 13 of their shots can from within the box, only four of them headed, the vast majority coming from open play rather than dead balls. The 33 penalty box touches Arsenal had in normal time was 10 more than the average in a Champions League match this season, more than Real Madrid managed when they put four past Napoli or indeed than they themselves registered when they smashed six goals into the Lyon net. Turning that penalty box pressure into good quality chances was a slog, but for most of the match Porto had eight or nine outfield players camped in the immediate confines of their penalty area. Getting into shooting positions required eye of the needle stuff, the sort that Odegaard delivered in quite spectacular fashion for Leandro Trossard's goal."

Barcelona's youth steal the show

Barcelona cruised to victory yesterday when they beat Napoli 3-1 and punched their tickets to the quarterfinals. While veterans like Robert Lewandowski got on the scoresheet, youngsters like Lamine Yamal provided a glimpse at a viable -- and exciting -- future for the team. Here's Chuck Booth on his outlook on Barcelona's prospects.

  • Booth: "Out of the 29 players to feature for Barcelona in La Liga or Champions League play this season, 11 of them are 21 years old or younger. … It may be a season for Barcelona that doesn't end in silverware but this seems like the beginning of what could be a great era for the club if proper development continues. Financial issues can be eased by relying on the academy and under Xavi they're showing improvement by the day. Playing with house money in the last eight of the Champions League, Barcelona will become a team that no one wants to face as when there is no pressure and nothing to lose."
