Atletico Madrid vs. RB Leipzig score: Tyler Adams' late winner sends German side to Champions League semis

RB Leipzig have officially booked their ticket to the Champions League semifinals, where they will face off against Paris Saint-Germain for a spot in the competition's final. A late goal from young American Tyler Adams helped sink their Spanish opponents, Atletico Madrid, in a 2-1 victory on Thursday.

Here's what to know and see from the dramatic 90 minutes:

Top plays

Tyler Adams, American hero
Tyler Adams has been a wild card in recent games for RB Leipzig, playing in any combination of positions as deemed necessary for his squad to be successful. Today, that positioning yielded success that his club has never seen before in its albeit short history. Adams' time to shine came in the final moments of the match when he felt confident enough to take a shot from just outside the box at the end of a counter from his team.

Adams' shot was fired hard and true toward goal, but received just enough of a deflection to send Jan Oblak the wrong direction and see the ball in the back of the net.

Joao Felix gives Atletico life
Though it wasn't hope that lasted until the end of the game, Atletico's chances of pulling a late victory came thanks to the talents of Joao Felix. His magnificent run into the box forced a desperate clumsy challenge from Lukas Klostermann, who had no choice but to lunge himself in front of the Atletico man. Felix earned the penalty, and he was the one to take it.

Though Peter Gulasci guessed where Felix was going with his short run-up, the shot was hit so confidently that the Leipzig keeper had no chance at stopping it.

Leipzig's pressure finally breaks through
From the jump Leipzig showed that they were going to force Atletico to play their deep backline style with heavy offensive pressure on their end. It was a style that created a bit of a slugfest in the early goings of the match. But RB Leipzig came out with a sharper focus on this strategy in the second, which allowed them to finally break through.

Notable performances

Let's rate some of the notable performances on the day, with one being the worst and 10 being perfection:

Tyler Adams, RB Leipzig
Came in and was the hero with his first goal for the club. Talk about a super sub. RATING: 9

Dayot Upamecano, RB Leipzig
Fantastic in the air, on the ground and in between. An absolute superstar with all of the potential in the world. RATING: 9

Saul Niguez, Atletico Madrid
Not his strongest game and was lucky not to get a card or two. Didn't show his normal creativity. RATING: 4

A look ahead

Leipzig moves on to the semifinals, where they'll face PSG in a matchup of clubs who have never made it to a UCL final. The second of the semifinals is yet to be determined.
