Kylian Mbappe injury: PSG star on crutches ahead of Champions League return

PSG won the Coupe de France on Friday by beating Saint-Etienne 1-0, but it may have come at a costly price. Neymar scored the winner in the first half, but the title-winning result was dampened by the scary injury to superstar attacker Kylian Mbappe.

The French forward was on the wrong end of a horrific tackle from Loic Perrin 31 minutes in, which saw the Saint-Etienne player sent off with a red card, while Mbappe had to leave the field injured.

Mbappe was going at goal with pace before he was just wrecked down low with his ankle being caught under Perrin. You could see his right ankle turn, and it isn't pretty. A brawl nearly broke out moments after. Here's how it looked:

Mbappe didn't have to be carted off the field, but shortly after he was seen with his ankle wrapped heavily and was on crutches. His status moving forward has yet to be determined, but it is alarming. PSG has the Coupe de la Ligue final next week against Lyon, but much more importantly is the Champions League in 19 days. PSG is into the quarterfinals and will face Atalanta on Aug. 12. That's already a tricky tie to begin with, given how strong Atalanta has been as of late. Not having Mbappe would be a serious blow to PSG's chances of lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time in club history.

As for the match, PSG created plenty of chances but lack sharpness in the final third. Neymar's goal came 14 minutes in on a rebound.

PSG won Ligue 1 this season, as the club's played its first official match since March 11.
