Manchester City vs. Real Madrid score: Pep Guardiola's men win seven-goal Champions League thriller at Etihad

In what was an absolutely astonishing 90 minutes of attacking soccer, Manchester City defeated Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal at the Etihad on Tuesday, 4-3. A wild match with what felt like countless chances, the three first-half goals were surpassed by four in the second half, with Los Blancos staying within striking distance ahead of next week's second leg in Madrid despite perhaps not deserving to.

City were clearly the better team with the better chances, and anybody who witness that spectacle of soccer has to feel surprised to see Real even with life entering the second leg. City won the xG battle, 2.37-1.48, but while the hosts were dominant with five more shots and nearly 20% more possession, it was the chances they missed that will be remembered. With a bit better finishing or a true striker (the heavily rumored coming signing of Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland, for example), they really could have put five or six past the Spanish side.

Going up 2-0 just 11 minutes in through Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus, it was Karim Benzema who pulled Real within one at 2-1 before Vinicius Jr. did to make it 3-2. Then Benzema did it again, pulling Real back within one late on with the final goal of the game via a penalty kick.

Four different players scored for City, with Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva joining the first two, but Pep Guardiola won't be overly thrilled with the result. Yes, a win is a win, but City were well on their way to a multi-goal victory multiple times in this match, with Real clawing back and leaving all to be decided at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With the result Manchester City will feel ...

Frustrated. It almost feels like they drew, just because the one-goal advantage isn't what they feel like they deserved. They made the Real Madrid's defense look silly at times, and a flurry of back-post crosses late on looked sure to result in the fifth, but nothing came of them. They will remain the favorite in this tie, but what was set to be a comfortable night's sleep will now be one of twisting and turning, wondering what could have been.

With the result Real Madrid will feel ...

Absolutely elated. They know they had no business keeping this close, but their big boys stepped up with Benzema and Vinicius Jr. each producing stellar goals. Now, the defense must improve, because if not, they'll be done. But they ended the 90 minutes with life in a match where they looked lifeless 11 minutes in.

Game-changing moment: Vinicius Jr.'s golazo

City were leading Real 3-1 in the 53rd minute when Phil Foden got his deserved goal, and it looked like the flood gates were about to open. But then, with Fernandinho marking him, Vinicius Jr. pulled off one of the solo goals of the season. A dummy nutmeg saw him through on goal at the halfway line, finishing superbly from a tight angle. Take a look:

That goal kept Real in it, gave them a bit more of belief in momentum and prevented a 4-1 score which could have been the death blow.

Man of the match: Kevin de Bruyne

From our James Benge:

Another showpiece tie has been bent to De Bruyne's will. From his perfectly timed dart to flick in Riyad Mahrez's cross, he was at his very best, showcasing the full repertoire of inch-perfect passes, dynamic runs and strength in duels.

And Benge is right. He was out of this world and far and away the best player on the pitch, but he knows some of those balls he delivered in should have been tucked away. Can he repeat this performance in the second leg?

Most selfish moment of the game: Riyad Mahrez' miss

With City in full control at 2-0, and with one goal likely putting Real away comfortably, Riyad Mahrez was sent through down the right. He had Phil Foden open on the left side of the goal, but he decided to do this ...

It's impossible not to wonder if that miss will haunt Manchester City.

Top display of skill: Foden's tasty touch

You don't need words to describe beauty. Just take a glance at Foden settling a ball like he has a magnet in his boot.

Or was it?

Apologies in advance to our Micah Richards, who was caught on camera during the match with an incredible bit of skill. Eating a pasta dish while watching the game, here is how he reacted to de Bruyne's opener.

Incredible timing to keep that piece of penne pasta in his mouth, and you could argue it was more impressive than Foden. See, that loan move to Fiorentina was worth something!

Just five minutes until kickoff

The battle of league leaders is almost underway!

Can Manchester City keep their streak going?

The performance of the defense has been so impressive that City are the only side to not concede a goal during the knockout stages of Champions League play. It feels like a tall task to pitch a shutout versus Real Madrid but if City can use homefield advantage to get it done, it will bode well for the second leg in Spain.

Could Karim Benzema be outshined by his teammate?

With no Kyle Walker or Joao Cancelo, our James Benge could see Vinicius Junior finding space to exploit saying,

Vinicius won't be handing out favors to those putting in extra effort. When he realizes he is up against the weak link on the pitch, as was the case against Andreas Christensen at Stamford Bridge, he is remorseless in his probing. At full pelt Walker should be able to tame the Brazilian. If City do not have their best covering defender at that sort of level, then it might be Vinicius rather than Benzema who does the damage.

We've ranked the top 50 players remaining in the Champions League

Seven of the top ten will take part in this game but one who could play a pivotal role is number three, Kevin De Bruyne

At the start of this season, it looked like De Bruyne might be entering his post-prime stage, with injuries becoming a more frequent occurrence for the Belgian while Bernardo seemed to be relishing primary playmaking duties. Yet in recent weeks, he has hit his peak yet again, devastating on the biggest occasions and with new wrinkles to his game as a more progressive, ball-carrying creator. It is yet another way in which he can beat teams. -- James Benge

Can Benzema keep it going?

All eyes on Stones

Back to fitness and right into the lineup, John Stones will play a critical role if this hybrid back three is to work for Manchester City. Without many defensive subs, he will likely need to play most of the match at a high level while going up against Real Madrid's wingers. In attack, things are as expected for Pep Guardiola as he is rolling out the best players available to him.

Manchester City starting lineup

Starters: Ederson, Stones, Dias, Laporte, Zinchenko, Rodrigo, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Mahrez, Foden, Jesus

Reserves: Steffen, Carson, Ake, Sterling, Gundogan, Grealish, Fernandinho, Egan-Riley, Mbete, Palmer, McAtee, Lavia

Madrid lineup analysis

It's a strong lineup from Carlo Ancelotti as he looks to take advantage of the absence of Cancelo. While Rodrygo has rotated in and out of the squad, the work rate that he and Vini Jr. will provide could cause some problems for Manchester City in this one. If he needs to lock things down late, Casemiro is at least on the bench to come in.

Real Madrid's lineup is in

Starters: Corutois, Carvajal, Militao, Alaba, Kroos, Benzema, Modric, Valverde, Vini Jr., Rodrygo, Mendy

Reserves: Lunin, Fuidias, Vallejo, Nach, Asensio, Marcelo, Casemiro, Lucas, Bale, Ceballos, Isco, Camavinga

Most of the team is picking Man City to come through with a home victory

One matchup to watch: Karim Benzema vs. Ruben Dias.

The Portuguese defender will be tasked with shutting down the guy our crew thinks is the best player remaining in the competition. Benzema, 34, is having far and away the best season of his career. His 39 goals is seven more than his second-best season. He's had back-to-back hat tricks in the knockout stage and is playing out of his mind. Can Dias, arguably the best defender in the world, stop him?

Manchester City squad update

Kyle Walker hasn't been spotted with the squad, but Pep Guardiola could be in for a boost as John Stones appears to be available at least for a place on the bench. Stones could also deputize at right back but Real Madrid will surely target him to test his health.

Where these teams rank in our power rankings

Our James Benge has Liverpool leading the way, with City in second, Real in third and Villarreal fourth. Here's what he had to say about the two playing in this one.

Man City

City certainly had the look of potential champions in their second leg against Atletico Madrid. Even when the pressure came -- and in the second half Los Rojiblancos delivered it with a ferocity befitting of their manager -- their defense buckled without breaking. For the time he was on the pitch, Kyle Walker looked a vital weapon in quelling any breaks in behind while the tandem of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte have been so good of late that there is an argument Ruben Dias ought to have to fight to win his place back. After years in which it seemed City too easily slipped into shootouts, they now profile as defensive powerhouses, the only team left in the competition to give up fewer than one expected goal (xG) per game.

Real Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea might both believe that over the course of their ties with Real Madrid they were the better team. What neither of them did not have, however, is Luka Modric and Karim Benzema. Both proved to be game-changers in ties that looked to be slipping out of reach for Ancelotti, with the latter in particular seeming hellbent on dragging his team to Paris.

Madrid have scored eight goals in knockout stages, their No. 9 has delivered seven of them. They have tallied 5.25 xG, 2.95 of them going to Benzema. In other words, 56% of their shot quality is through one man. There are other great players across this team, but if anything should limit their Frenchman's effectiveness come the semifinals then it will be a tough task indeed to win their 14th European Cup.

Real Madrid team news

No injuries of note for Real, even including the struggling Eden Hazard, and that combined with no suspensions means Ancelotti will have pretty much everybody at his disposal. There should not be any real surprises in the starting XI, but don't be shocked if they approach this match very defensively, especially in the middle. They must slow down the pace and frustrate City to come away with something.

City team news

For the favorites, star fullback Joao Cancelo is suspended for the match, while John Stones and Kyle Walker are dealing with minor injuries. No player will miss the next match if they get a yellow in this one as the accumulation is reset following the quarterfinals. While the attack will get their chances, the big concern for Guardiola will be stopping Karim Benzema. Expect Ruben Dias to be tasked with tracking the Frenchman often.
