UEFA Champions League draw results: PSG vs. Barcelona, Chelsea vs. Atletico Madrid, plus Europa draw confirmed

Europe's biggest clubs have learned their fate in the knockout stages of the Champions League after the round of 16 draw was made in Nyon, Switzerland.

Stand out ties include the meeting of Atalanta, last season's surprise quarter-finalists, and Real Madrid, Chelsea being drawn with Atletico Madrid and a reunion between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain four years on from La Remontada, when the Spanish side overcame a four goal first leg deficit to advance to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile the Europa League threw up a string of fascinating ties with Spanish league leaders Real Sociedad drawn against Manchester United, Red Bull Salzburg pitted against Villarreal and Arsenal due to face Benfica.

Atletico-Chelsea, now that's a tie with narrative. Diego Costa back at his former club - you can guarantee fireworks there.

Two of the German sides are out and you suspect neither will be particularly disappointed with their draw. Certainly it could have been worse for Bayern than Lazio but the Italians gave plenty of problems to Dortmund in the group stage, they aren't to be taken for granted. We said on Que Golazo last week that this Gladbach team has something of the Monaco semi-finalists from 2017 to them - that was a team that knocked out Manchester City with energetic, fearless football against a creaky defence. Could Guardiola fall victim again?

Any minute now... Although if you're joining us for the first time in a Champions League draw be warned, this won't go as quick as you think.

A fun fact here: of all the 16 teams in the Champions League last 16 not one of them is top of their domestic competition.

A good year for Germany and Spain so far, both of those nations have all four of their representatives in the last 16. England and Italy both lost one along the way and have a trio in the knockout rounds whilst Portugal (Porto) and France (Paris Saint-Germain) wrap up the contenders. Certainly that begs questions over how skewed towards the big leagues this competition has come.

It also dramatically limits the options available to some clubs. Take Bayern. They cannot draw Atletico Madrid as they were in the same group. Gladbach and RB Leipzig are also unavailable as they are from the same nation. The five they could draw are Porto, Atalanta, Lazio, Sevilla or Barcelona.

A dreadful way to start this morning with the news that Gerard Houllier has passed away at the age of 73. At club level he will be remembered for his outstanding success with Liverpool in 2001 - when the Reds won the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup and Super Cup - as well as winning two Ligue 1 titles with Lyon.

He was also a key figure in the development of French football at Clairefontaine and played a key role in the revival of the France national team in the period that led to them winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

We're going to keep matters largely focused on the Champions League for now, with a quick recap of the key draw rules and the seeds for the last 16.

A reminder that:
- Teams cannot draw another club from the same league
- Teams cannot draw a club that was in the same group as them
- The seeded teams will play the second leg at home

Seeded teams
Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain

Unseeded teams
Atletico Madrid, Borussia Monchengladbach, Porto, Atalanta, Sevilla, Lazio, Barcelona, RB Leipzig

Good morning and welcome to live coverage of the draws for the Champions League round of 16 and Europa League round of 32. There's some mouthwatering ties in both of those competitions, especially the former, and very shortly we'll recap the rules around who can draw who and who is among the seeds. There are several really dangerous teams lurking among the unseeded group.
