USMNT vs. Canada score: Americans score fastest goal in team history to win Group B in Concacaf Gold Cup

The United States men's national team won Group B at the Concacaf Gold Cup on Sunday by edging Canada 1-0 on a record-breaking goal by defender Shaq Moore for the team's 11th straight win. The Tenerife man scored the fastest recorded goal in USMNT history, grabbing the winner just 20 seconds in. It started with a lovely ball from Kellyn Acosta, who got it out to the left to Sebastian Lletget, with the Los Angeles Galaxy defender needing just one touch to feed it across the face of the goal where Moore was waiting for the simple tap in.

Here is the moment:

And that was all the U.S. needed. It was a match where the team struggled to create in what was their toughest battle of the group stage, but you can't ignore the team being 3-0-0 entering the knockout stages.

While Canada will lament finishing second in the group, they had their chances to grab something from this one. A draw would have been enough to top the group, instead they finish second but still have realistic chances to make a deep run.

For the final half hour, Canada were the more threatening team and came close to equalizing in the second half. U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner made a couple really good saves in the second half, including one from a tight angle inside the six, to record the clean sheet.

Canada finished with 14 total shots, while the U.S. had just six, but in the end the U.S. sweep their group and have serious momentum moving forward.

As things stand at the moment, the U.S. would face Jamaica in the quarterfinals.

So it's fairly simple for the U.S. -- win the game, win the group. Failing to win this one, combined with Mexico beating El Salvador later, and we could get a USA-Mexico semifinal.

Storylines

USA: The momentum is there after that big win over Martinique, but let's remember, it was Martinique. This game should tell us more about the U.S. than any other match of the group stage, and a victory is important for many reasons. A win here would give them more momentum entering the quarterfinals, where they will face either Costa Rica or Jamaica in Arlington, but it is more about being tested and facing real adversity against a solid team. From here on out there shouldn't be any easy ones, and after struggling with Haiti, another tough, tight one could be beneficial for a team looking to find a consistent rhythm.

Canada: Not nearly as scary of a team without Alphonso Davies, this Canada side still has potential. They have scored four goals in each of their first two games, more than any other team in the cup, and the key will be containing Cyle Larin, who had two goals last time out against Haiti. The Besiktas man has pace and technical ability, and he only needs a little room to pull off an effort. Expect him to get his looks, and the U.S. defense will need to press him quickly or risk paying for it.

Welcome to the CBS Sports live blog of the Gold Cup. I'm Roger Gonzalez, and I'll be guiding you through today's Group B showdown between the United States and Canada. The U.S. needs to win to take the group, while Canada just need a draw. If things go the wrong way, the U.S. could be looking at a showdown with Mexico in the semifinals instead of the final, depending what happens later today.
