USMNT vs. Morocco score, ratings: Christian Pulisic shines as USA cruise by fellow World Cup 2022 participant

Getty Images

The United States men's national team kicked off their summer with a convincing 3-0 victory over Morocco on Wednesday in an international friendly. Two goals in the first half put the Americans in full control before Gregg Berhalter's side added a third in the second half of what was an efficient attacking performance in Cincinnati.

New Leeds United man Brenden Aaronson scored the winner 26 minutes in thanks to an absolutely ridiculous first touch, turn and assist from Christian Pulisic. Take a look at this:

Timothy Weah added the second in the 32nd minute before Haji Wright scored from a penalty kick on his USMNT debut in the second half. The penalty looked like it would go to Pulisic before he handed the ball to Wright in a surprise move, with the well-traveled striker finishing calmly into the lower-left of the goal.

Facing a talented team that has also qualified for the 2022 World Cup, the U.S. managed to keep Morocco out of goal despite the African side producing a ton of chances and taking 22 shots. Matt Turner was sharp in goal with some key stops, while Morocco also missed a penalty in the second half.

Morocco had double the amount of shots that the U.S. had, but the Americans managed to put 10 of their 11 shots on frame. The U.S. finished with an expected goal total of 2.10, while Morocco finished at 2.07.

The U.S. now look ahead to Sunday's friendly against Uruguay before Nations League matches against Grenada and El Salvador.

USMNT player ratings

How did each player perform in this one? Here are our player ratings for the match for every starter, substitute and manager.

All ratings are out of 10, and the higher the number the better. A zero would be a first-minute red card. A 10 would be like a dominant hat trick.

Name MinutesHow did they do? Rating

(GK) Matt Turner

90

Confident when called upon, Turner ended up making eight saves. While most were easy ones for him, he shined under pressure. Turner also completed 40 percent of his long balls and was solid at retaining possession when he had the ball.

8

(DEF) Reggie Cannon

90

Didn't venture forward much but Cannon registered an assist the one time that he did. Cannon was asked to do something new for the national team by slotting into a back three and while he was shaky at times, it was a good performance that likely ups his chances at going to the World Cup at a deep position.

8

(DEF)  Walker Zimmerman

45

It won't register as an assist but Zimmerman's ball over the top to setup Aaronson's goal was beautiful. He wasn't asked to be the aggressive center back in the middle of a back three and it helped him be better in possession than normal.

8

(DEF)  Aaron Long

90

Right into the fire, Long was asked to essentially defend Achraf Hakimi due to how far up the pitch Robinson was and he got the job done. Long had a team high six clearances to add to an interception and a blocked shot.

9

(DEF)  Antonee Robinson

45

Had a hard time getting on the ball and only attempted one cross in the first half. He was up against the tougher flank of Morocco's defense but not a performance that we've come to expect from Robinson.

6

(MID) Tyler Adams

66

Critical to the United States plan of pressuring the ball high and turning Morocco over. Adams was tidy as always with his passing and along with Long, shined the brightest on the defensive end.

7

(MID)  Brenden Aaronson

72

⚽ 26' Wind him up and watch him go. Aaronson had another strong appearance. Came from deep to score a goal and almost assisted another with great interplay with Haji Wright in what is only their first camp together. Aaronson's soccer mind is next level and he has the energy to keep up with his thought process.

9

(MID)  Yunus Musah

90

An okay performance where Musah was fine pressing but didn't look as comfortable on the left side of midfield as he usually is on the right. If Aaronson keeps up these performances in deeper positions, Musah could find himself on the bench.

5

(MID)  Christian Pulisic

65

What awareness in the box from Pulisic to take an excellent first touch before waiting for the run from Aaronson for the opener. He also had a nice moment to give Wright the penalty he won. Pulisic became the fastest player to double digit goals and assists in only 49 caps.

9

(FWD) Tim Weah

90

⚽ 32' Shooters shoot. It's funny that Weah's least likely shot was the one that went in, but every time he got the ball, he knew that he was going to test the keeper. Putting all three shots on frame, Weah is becoming a winger who keepers fear in their box for the national team.

8

(FWD) Jesus Ferreira

45

In a big moment, it wasn't Ferreria's finest match. He was okay, ensuring that the attack kept ticking but wasn't able to get a shot on target.

SubstitutesReplacedHow did they do?Rating

Joe Scally

Robinson, '45

His best moment involved losing the ball to Hakimi then tracking back to win it back without fouling, but that's exactly what you want to see from a defender. Everyone will make mistakes but Scally was able to recover and ensure it didn't end in a goal. Conceded a phantom penalty but not going to hold that against him.

6

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Zimmerman, '45

Cool, calm, and collected. Carter-Vickers was caught out early for a lack of communication with Long but he made three clearances and two interceptions in his limited time. It was a good performance from him.

7

Luca de la Torre

Adams, '66

Playing in a deeper role than normal, de la Torre was fun in his limited minutes pinging the ball around the pitch. It's something that could prove to be useful to change the match if the United States are behind in the World Cup.

6

Weston McKennie Aaronson, '75 Great to see McKennie back to fitness and getting a good runout. N/A
Haji Wright Ferreira, '45 ⚽ 64' A true nine, Wright was confident pointing to Aaronson for where he wanted the ball and testing the keeper when it was delivered. His penalty wasn't the best but that's alright. Pulisic won't be handing them off at the World Cup.  7
Malik TillmanPulisic, '65Came in on the left wing and took some set plays for the team. It will be interesting to judge Tillman when he has more minutes under his belt but a promising start from him.6

Gregg Berhalter

6

Are we seeing a new Berhalter? He was conservative to get through qualifying but seemed like he loosened the reigns on Wednesday. It's a friendly so don't read too much into things but the initial game plan was spot on and it's clear that his methods on the training ground are working.

It wasn't easy but it's a 3-0 victory for the USMNT

What a win over Morocco as the United States pressed the Atlas Lions off the pitch in the first half before holding on in the second half. It's a good win for the team as Tim Weah, Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright hit the back of the net.

You wouldn't realize it but Morocco have taken 20 shots

It has been an excellent case of game management from the United States even though they allowed a penalty chance that rattled off the bar. But the USMNT has been more clinical than the Atlas Lions which makes a difference.

The United States with a stronger close to the match by far

Morocco aren't organized to close this out and while the United States haven't scored more goals, they've been able to reel off long passing players while staying on the front foot.

Positive from Scally

I think Berhalter will look at the film on Scally giving up the penalty and let that slide. There looked like nothing there, and he has tracked back well on Hakimi. It's been a good shift.

There didn't seem to be contact?

It's a penalty to Morocco and the ball doesn't lie as the ball goes off the bar. Joe Scally conceded the penalty but the clean sheet is intact. Weston McKennie has also entered the match now.

Time to take Aaronson out?

He takes another blow and with nothing at stake, it may be time to make a change.

Tillman enters for Pulisic

It's debut central with the United States ahead 3-0. He goes right into the left wing position that Pulisic vacated.

It's a penalty! And Wright's first goal! 3-0 USA

A confident take from the spot and a wonderful welcome to Haji Wright!

Aaronson slow to get up

Man, he's getting hacked. Might be time to pull him off soon. But his quickness and agility is allowing him into space, and Morocco have chopped him down a couple times out of frustration.

A miscommunication almost leads to a Morocco chance

One of the downsides of swapping center backs at half is that they don't communicate as well. No one picked up the Moroccan player but Matt Turner was able to take care of things.

Wright almost debuts in a big way

More aggressive play of Aaronson sees him play Haji Wright into a good shot. It's again saved but you can already see how direct Wright is.

Good and not so good from Musah

One moment you get a brilliant touch from the Valencia man,and the next his positioning his way off defensively, allowing a clear path in. He is far from a liability, but he needs to show more consistency defensively moving forward, I think, to really secure a spot.

Here come changes

Walker Zimmerman has been withdrawn for Cameron Carter-Vickers, Joe Scally enters for Antonee Robinson and Haji Wright has come in for Jesus Ferreira. Big moment for these three.

Not bad at all

Some encouraging performances there in the first half. Weah, Zimmerman and Pulisic stood out for me. Aaronson got better as the half went on. Not super sharp from Jesus Ferreira in terms of end product.

Better from Ferreira

Rolling through the middle like a freight train, he is just stopped by Bounou in a tight area. It's the most dangerous chance from the FC Dallas striker so far.

Morocco with a dangerous chance

Ferreira lost the ball to Ounahi after a corner kick and it just skimmed over Turner's bar. Gotta be more careful in games that matter.

Zimmerman and Weah look sharp early

Encouraging starts from the two. Zimmerman has been fairly sturdy at the back and delivered a lovely ball over the top to Pulisic, who did great with it to set up Aaronson. But Weah, to my point earlier, is not wasting time. It is a touch or two and then boom, a pass or shot. With a defense that likes to close down as soon as you turn, being quick with the ball has been key.

Gotta shoot the ball for the keeper to make a mistake

Weah earned that one

Aaronson's goal was fun

Oh my, have a day Tim Weah! 2-0 USA

After he got the ball from Cannon, there was nothing going through Weah's head but shooting it and he uncorked quite a strike to baffle Bounou and double the United States lead.

There it is! 1-0 USA

Walker Zimmerman finds Pulisic over the top before he calmly brings it down for Aaronson's late run into the box. Just a well-worked opener.

Pros early on

What has been a bright spot, I think, is how quickly the U.S. have been to get a shot off. Decisive when needed.

Fancy footwork from Pulisic

It doesn't go in but Pulisic takes on a defender before Weah's shot stings Bounou's hands. It feels like only a matter of time until a team puts a ball in the back of the net.

Quite an open start in the early going

Bounou has been the busier keeper facing two shots on target but it has been a pretty open game to start things. Hakimi has been quiet but expect that to change as the match grows on. The United States are looking to get Pulisic on the break more often but there hasn't been much space to operate over the top in the first 15 mintues.

Masina will want that one back

Space between Cannon and Zimmerman was exploited but Matt Turner came up with a big save. Aaron Long was also strong to block the follow up attempt.

What is Robinson's position tonight?

With the United States pressuring the ball, Long, Zimmerman and Cannon have fallen into more of a back three with Robinson in line with Musah and Adams in midfield. It has helped when the ball needs to go up the pitch but it will be interesting to see if Morocco can exploit space behind Robinson.

Jesus Ferreira tests Bounou early

It looks like a traditional 4-3-3 as Berhalter has the team pressing high. It has already resulted in two chances but they're looking good and taking the game to Morocco on their terms.

Underway!!!!

The match has begun!

The teams are taking the field

With five minutes to go, the United States will search for their first win over Morocco
