Chiefs win Super Bowl 2023: Patrick Mahomes rallies from 10-point halftime deficit to claim second title

The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions. Patrick Mahomes helped the franchise to its third title in its history and second since he's become the starter, slaying the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35.

K.C. wins Super Bowl LVII thanks to a stellar second half in which it rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit.

After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, K.C. kicked the ball off to the Eagles, who marched 75 yards down the field for an opening-drive touchdown. Mahomes and company would quickly answer with a touchdown drive of their own. However, their next possession resulted in a missed field goal by Harrison Butker, which was exacerbated with another long touchdown drive by Philadelphia. With momentum slipping away, the Chiefs defense made one of the biggest plays of the first half, as Nick Bolton returned Jalen Hurts's fumble 36 yards for a touchdown.

That knotted the game at 14, but Philly would tack on another Hurts rushing touchdown and a field goal before halftime to lead by 10. To make matters even more dire for the Chiefs, Mahomes aggravated his ankle injury in the closing minutes of the first half.

That said, those concerns were dispelled once the second half began. Mahomes was remarkably sharp to begin the third quarter and led three-straight touchdown drives as the Chiefs outscored Philadelphia, 21-3, at the midway point of the fourth quarter to take the lead for the first time all evening. Kadarius Toney proved to be a pivotal contributor down the stretch, as he caught one of those touchdowns during that run and later ripped off a Super Bowl-record 65-yard punt return that set K.C. up for a Mahomes to Skyy Moore goal-line touchdown.

However, the Eagles wouldn't go down quietly, as they tied the game at 35 with 5:15 to play in the fourth quarter. It was at that point that the Chiefs went on a clock-burning drive that featured a gutsy 26-yard scramble by Mahomes that eventually set up the game-winning field goal by Butker.

Mahomes completed 21 of his 27 passes for 182 yards passing and three touchdowns. Travis Kelce caught six passes from Mahomes for 81 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Nick Bolton totaled nine tackles and returned a fumble by Hurts for a touchdown.

Patrick Mahomes has the most playoff wins (10) by a QB before turning 28. His 10 postseason wins already rank tied for 11th among quarterbacks all-time and his 32 passing touchdowns in the playoffs are tied for 8th all-time.

If the Chiefs pull this off, Mahomes would become the first player in NFL history with 5,000 passing yards and a Super Bowl title in a single season.

There's no denying that Mahomes is playing to firmly establish himself as an all-time great. Already, he's put up a fantastic résumé. The 27-year-old can become just the fifth starting quarterback with at least two MVPs and two championships under their belts. He also can become the first player to win MVP and the Super Bowl in the same season since Kurt Warner in 1999.

Patrick Mahomes just edged out Eagles QB Jalen Hurts to claim his second-career MVP earlier this week, but that may be some cause for concern for the Chiefs in this game. This is the fourth time in Super Bowl history that the MVP and MVP runner-up have squared off in the big game and the running up is 3-0 in those previous matchups.

While Philadelphia will sport A.J. Brown in this game after making the blockbuster trade for the wideout this offseason, the Chiefs were on the opposite side of that spectrum after trading away star receiver Tyreek Hill.

Shipping away that type of talent has changed the K.C. offense quite a bit. Mahomes has opted for more quick passes without Hill and has made that transition flawlessly. He led the NFL in EPA per dropback on throws inside the pocket, EPA per dropback with less than 2.5 seconds to throw, and tied an NFL record with 28 passing touchdowns to running backs and tight ends this season.

Mahomes also averaged a career-low 7.24 air yards, so he has certainly transitioned to a dink-and-dunk approach, which could bode well against a Philly pass rusher that has a knack for sacking the quarterback.

These teams did mirror one another throughout the season leading into Super Bowl LVII. The Chiefs averaged an NFL-best 29.1 points per game, while the Eagles led the NFC with 28.1 points per game. This is just the seventh time the top-two scoring offenses have met one another in the Super Bowl.

Notable takeaway from inatives: Clyde Edwards-Helaire will not play in Super Bowl LVII. He was recently activated off injured reserve, but the former first-round pick won't be giving it a go in this game. Still should see plenty of Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon.

Also, you may have heard Super Bowl LVII be dubbed the Andy Reid Bowl. That's because the current Chiefs coach was head coach of the Eagles from 1999 to 2012. In that time he became the franchise's all-time winningest head coach. Since then, he's defeated Philadelphia in his three head-to-heads against his former club with the Chiefs.

Of course, the big storyline this week has been Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce going up against his brother and Eagles center Jason Kelce. They are the first set of brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl. Both of them are also in the middle of Hall of Fame careers.

Both already have a Super Bowl title under their belts and have numerous All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections. Travis has been named to the Pro Bowl eight times and an All-Pro four times, while Jason has six Pro Bowl nods and five All-Pros.

Travis Kelce is one of just five tight ends in history with four first-team All-Pro selections.
