Juventus vs. Lyon score: Cristiano Ronaldo, Juve come up short in Champions League first leg

Lyon pulled off an upset over Juventus on Wednesday in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League matchup. The difference was a first half goal from the French side that was scored when Juve was caught off guard.

As the scoreline might indicate, this result was not the case of Lyon absolutely dominating Juventus. The Italian side got threatened plenty of times, first with numerous offensive pushes that quieted down the crowd at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Lyon had its chances, but they were few and far between.

One of those chances came in the first half when Houssem Aouar cut his way through the left side of the defense and found Lucas Tousart with a slight cross. Tousart had to jump so he could volley in the goal for the opener.

The rest of the match for the Serie A squad was characterized by wasted opportunities. Just minutes after the Lyon goal, Ronaldo was brought down just outside the penalty box for what could have been an excellent opportunity for the superstar to score. Instead, the free kick went to his teammate Miralem Pjanić, who hit the wall -- a theme of sorts with Juve set pieces. To go through the rest of those wasted chances would be an exercise in monotony.

Juve's biggest threats only came late, when the seemingly impenetrable fortress of Lyon's defense started to break down after spending most of the second half frustrating Ronaldo and company. Juventus players kept looking for whistles to no avail. Ronaldo tried to make it seem as though he was pushed in the back while going after a cross, and the official shook his head on the plea. The next chance was a disallowed goal from Dybala, who was a whole leg offside when he received the ball.

It was at that point that things started to unravel in the match, as the two sides had a flop-off in the hopes that the ref would call something in their favor. But nothing went right for Juventus, which will need a victory during the March 17 second leg to advance to the quarterfinals.

Possible suspensions

Each team has one player that would be suspended for the next leg if they get a yellow card. Lyon doesn't have to worry though as it's Kone, who is out with an injury. For Juve, Blaise Matuidi is facing a suspension if he's cautioned.

OL's stadium is looking ready

The pitch looks in tip-top shape for Juve's visit and a rowdy, loud crowd is expected for this one. The stadium is starting to fill up with kickoff in just under an hour.

Rudi Garcia on this match

Lyon coach Rudi Garcia spoke to the media on Tuesday and said this Juve team is a typical Maurizio Sarri squad.
"Juventus play the same way that Napoli and Empoli did under Sarri. He is a tactically astute coach: no doubt about it. We all thought Liverpool and Paris would win [in last week's first legs]. Now it's our turn to take our chance, and show our best form. We'll need to do that to do well in the first leg against Juve. And let's hope they do not play to 100 percent of their potential. If we just defend, we won't win the game. If we are to prosper, we'll need our fans' support to find more energy and to be on our top form."

Storylines - Lyon

This team had hit a rough patch with just one win in its previous five before winning at Metz on Friday, but it wasn't all that convincing of a performance to begin with. Moussa Dembele hit the 20-goal mark in that win and has really done a fine job helping deal with the loss of Memphis Depay. He'll need to finish a chance or two in this one for the French club to have life heading into the return leg.

Storylines - Juventus

Juve is in a quality run of form but Maurizio Sarri didn't really rest many players ahead of this clash. Entering with a day less of rest and so many recent fixtures, will they be a step slow here? Getting Giorgio Chiellini back from injury is a plus in defense, but he's still not back in sync. Ronaldo seems to score in every single match as of late, and he'll like his chances of finding the net once again here.
