Transfer deadline: Barcelona keep Dembele and land Aubameyang; Alli to Everton; Eriksen back in Premier League

The deadline for the winter transfer window closed on Monday with several clubs bolstering their squads ahead of the second half of the season. Some do it to compete for trophies or European qualification, while others need to be crafty in their acquisition of players to avoid a potential relegation. Let's take a look at the most notable moves of the day, featuring a busy 24 hours for Barcelona and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Busy Barca

Barcelona, for instance, were one of the most active clubs in this window as Xavi's squad fights for a top-four spot in Spain in order to reach the Champions League next season. In a dramatic turn of events throughout the day, Aubameyang will join Barcelona after terminating his contract with Arsenal ahead of the deadline. The deal is expected to be announced Tuesday morning.

The Gabon international joins Premier League imports Ferran Torres and Adama Traore in what has been a busy window for a Blaugrana side that chose to keep Ousmane Dembele, who is out of contract and free to sign with the club of his choice in the summer. Dembele was linked PSG and Barca president Joan Laporta said in a news conference on Monday that Dembele had an offer from a Premier League club, but ultimately chose to stay put despite being told to find a new club a couple weeks ago.

Liverpool miss out on gem

Liverpool, who landed Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Porto amid interest from Tottenham in a deal worth $50 million, ran into some hiccups in the final hours of deadline day as a deal for 19-year-old Fulham attacker Fabio Carvalho collapsed before the 6 p.m. ET buzzer, Fabrizio Romano reports. The Portuguese prospect completed a medical exam before the deadline but the paperwork to complete the deal was not submitted in time. This had all the makings of a sneaky-good move years from now, as the two sides will now have to wait until the summer to engage in talks once again.

Man United block Lingard exit

In a busy window that featured move for Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, Chris Wood from Burnley, Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon, Dan Burn from Brighton and Matt Targett from Aston Villa (via loan), Newcastle United had their sights set on Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard heading into deadline day. The Magpies and West Ham were keen on landing the England international, but ultimately Manchester United's blocked Lingard's departure despite interim manager Ralf Rangnick giving the move his blessing. And according to Fabrizio Romano, Lingard is expected to leave the club in the summer when he's out of contract.

Other notable moves

Other notable deadline day deals include Dele Alli finally leaving TottenhamChristian Eriksen joining Brentford and Manchester City landing 22-year-old River Plate striker Julian Alvarez as he'll join the club later in the year, potentially this summer. As for Alli, the 25-year-old out-of-favor Spurs midfielder will link up with Frank Lampard and Everton in a permanent move to Goodison Park that could be worth up to $53 million.

Out in Scotland where you can watch the Scottish Premiership on Paramount+, Juventus are shipping Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey to Rangers FC in a loan move until the end of the season.

A final note on Aubameyang

This is where I'll leave you tonight folks, with the deal that has dominated today. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is going to be a Barcelona player but you'll have to wait a while for an official announcement, which will come early tomorrow morning in Europe (and very early stateside). Arsenal are terminating the contract of their former club captain so he can move to Barcelona on a free transfer, the remaining formalities before the announcement are on their side rather than the Gunners.

Palace working to complete two deals

A slightly complex deal for Crystal Palace first of all as they work to sign Luke Plange from Derby but then loan him straight back. EFL rules say that Derby, stricken by financial difficulties, cannot register him unless he is earning the same salary as he was when he left. A £1m fee for the former Arsenal striker ultimately helps give Derby's administrators a little more financial wiggle room.

Meanwhile Palace are expected to make permanent Jean-Philippe Mateta's loan move though for less than the option they initially agreed with Mainz.

Botman ready for summer move

The January window is not even closed yet but already we have got players positioning themselves for summer moves. Among them is Sven Botman, who has confirmed that Newcastle and AC Milan were interested in signing him this summer. The Lille center back may well find further takers so good has he been over the course of this season.

What seems certain is that he could be one of many leaving the Ligue 1 champions before the 2022-23 campaign begins. "I can confirm both Newcastle and AC Milan were concrete options this winter," Botman told Dutch TV. "Both were good options for me. I assume that I will take a good step in my career next summer.

"Everyone says about Newcastle: it's all about money. But it's a very nice project, if you look at where Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain started. I think it would be very nice to be part of that, but of course Milan is a beautiful club."
