Morning buzz

• The Carolina Hurricanes lost a tough one to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night, but that pass from Alexander Semin to set up Jiri Tlusty in the first period was a thing of beauty. [Recap]

• Every single time that James van Riemsdyk scores for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brian Burke has to laugh out loud. And Philadelphia Flyers general manager, the man who traded him last summer for Luke Schenn, has to have nightmares. Van Riemsdyk scored two more goals during Toronto's 3-1 win against Buffalo on Thursday night giving him 11 this season.

That total puts him just one goal behind Pittsburgh's James Neal and Buffalo's Thomas Vanek for the league lead. What a great trade for Toronto. [Recap]

• For the Sabres, meanwhile, it was their first game under new coach Ron Rolston. And it produced the same result: A loss. It was a particularly tough night for defensemen Tyler Myers and Robyn Regehr.

That means the Sabres gave up 22 more shot attempts than they took when those guys were on the ice during 5-on-5 play. That's terrible.

They're only costing owner Terry Pegula a combined $16 million in salary this season.

• Remember when Thomas Hickey was the No. 4 overall pick by the Los Angeles Kings?

Yeah, that didn't exactly work out well for anybody. Hickey was placed on waivers by the Kings earlier this season, and the Islanders were there to pick him up. He ended up scoring his first career goal on Thursday, and it couldn't have come at a better time -- in overtime of a 4-3 come-from-behind Islanders win at Montreal. The Islanders already hit a home run when they picked up another Kings castoff a couple of years ago -- forward Matt Moulson -- and they're hoping that lightning can strike twice. [Recap]

• Flyers forward Matt Read is going to miss six weeks due to a torn rib cage. [Flyers]

• Rick Nash is still out of the lineup for the Rangers, and there was some discussion that the hit from Milan Lucic that knocked him out was dirty. Lucic said it was clean. [CSNNE]
