(STATS) - Everybody knows the aerial assault of Jeremiah Briscoe is coming. No team has been able to stop it.

Briscoe threw five touchdown passes and set the FCS single-season record before fifth-seeded Sam Houston State staved off Chattanooga 41-36 in the second round of the playoffs Saturday in Huntsville, Texas.

The 6-foot-3 redshirt junior raised his season total to 57 touchdown passes, surpassing the 56 thrown by Mississippi Valley State's Willie Totten in 1984 and Grambling State's Bruce Eugene in 2005.

The Bearkats (12-0), who next play at fourth-seeded James Madison (11-1) in the quarterfinals next Friday, had to hold on to remain the only unbeaten team in the FCS.

Trailing 41-36, Chattanooga (9-4) started a drive from its 38 with under three minutes remaining and moved to the Sam Houston 25 before the 10-play possession ended with 17 seconds to go.

Briscoe completed 20 of 40 passes for 363 yards with one interception. The Southland Conference player of the year set the TD record with a 26-yard pass to freshman Nathan Stewart with 9:02 left in the fourth quarter. The extra point failed, and that kept the Bearkats' lead at 41-33.

Chattanooga closed within 41-36 on Henrique Ribeiro's 29-yard field goal at the 4:36 mark.

The visitors from the Southern Conference controlled the clock for 39 minutes, 26 seconds and outgained the nation's No. 1 offense 531-421.

Quarterback Alejandro Bennifield had 380 yards of total offense and a touchdown pass, while Derrick Craine carried the ball 22 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mocs were eliminated from last year's second round by nearly the same score, 41-35 in overtime at Jacksonville State.

This year, it was just a bit too much Briscoe, who connected for three touchdown passes to Sam Houston's all-time receptions leader Yedidiah Louis (eight receptions, 156 yards) as well as one to Davion Davis. Briscoe was under heavy pressure and got dinged up while enduring six of the Mocs' seven sacks.

Sam Houston, top-ranked in the STATS FCS Top 25, has the second-most wins in the FCS since 2011 - a 68-19 overall record.
