The Friday 5 p.m. news dump was taken to a new level late Sunday before July 4th when Alabama athletics announced on its website that the program had self-reported 19 violations to the NCAA during the 2015-16 athletic season.

All the violations were of the lower-level variety, categorized under Level III (breach of conduct) or Level IV (incidental issues) by the Crimson Tide. They spanned 11 sports in total with a quarter of the violations belonging to the football program. As usual, some of the secondary violations were relatively ridiculous when considering the vast and all-encompassing NCAA rule book.

Let's take a look.

  • A former player "provided personal training" to a current player for free. Alabama responded with rules education and getting restitution paid to a charity.
  • "A trophy was temporarily placed in an area where prospects taking an official visit would be, which resulted in an impermissible recruiting decoration of that area." Alabama once again provided rules education and then "declared prospects involved ineligible until reinstated by NCAA."
  • A coach sent a recruiting text to a prospect at an incorrect time, resulting in the coach being banned from making recruiting calls for two weeks and the prospect not being contacted by the Tide for a month.
  • A coach called a prospect twice in a week. Alabama educated him on the rules, suspended him from calling any recruits for two weeks and held off on contacting the prospect in question for two weeks.

Most of the other violations involved impermissible recruiting contact and activities, including a swimmer buying a T-shirt for a prospect, and a track recruit's parent getting an extra night of lodging.
