Pro Bowl DT Jay Ratliff left the locker room on crutches after the Cowboys' preseason game with the Rams on Saturday.
Ratliff was active in playing limited snaps for the first time all preseason but took himself out after suffering the injury in the Cowboys’ 20-19 win over St. Louis.
The word from the locker room was that Ratliff could have a high-ankle sprain, which is typically a 4-to-6 week rehab.
One other source in the locker room said “he’s playing” when asked about Ratliff’s injury, obviously referring to the Sept. 5 season opener against the Giants. The Cowboys haven't sent out an official injury report following the game.
Ratliff has been out most of the preseason with plantar fasciitis in his foot. He was limited in most practices early in training camp and held out of the first two preseason games until Saturday.
In the snaps he did play Saturday, Ratliff was active in the Rams’ backfield, disrupting a few running plays.
If Ratliff does miss time, the Cowboys would likely lean on third-year pro Josh Brent and possibly defensive end Marcus Spears, who said after the game he’s only played “a handful” of snaps at nose tackle this year but said he would be comfortable if that’s what he’s asked to do.
