Heatley scorches Bruins for three goals, assist for Senators wire reports

OTTAWA -- Dany Heatley has found a solution for his offensive woes: stick to the basics.

Heatley scored three goals and set up another Tuesday night in the Ottawa Senators' 4-1 victory against the Boston Bruins.

After scoring only three goals in 13 games, Heatley has four goals in his past two contests, both victories for the Senators.

"When you get into a slump, sometimes offensively you try and do too much and not shoot the puck," Heatley said. "I think we've all been guilty of that and the last two nights we've just tried to make the game simpler."

Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist for Ottawa, and Andrej Meszaros added two assists.

Goalie Martin Gerber made his sixth consecutive start for the Senators and looks to have solidified his lock on the No. 1 position as Ray Emery sits.

Gerber made 28 saves. He lost his shutout bid when Glen Murray scored with less than three minutes to play in the third period.

Alex Auld made his third consecutive start for the Bruins since relieving Tim Thomas during an 8-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Boston on March 6. He made 21 saves.

The Bruins have only one victory in their past six games, and have only seven goals in that span. They have been shut out 1-0 twice, including a shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday.

"We're kind of struggling to score goals, but before this game we got three out of four points, so it was pretty good before this game," rookie David Krejci said. "We've got to bear down and try to score on our chances. I think we played pretty good until they scored two goals. We had some good chances early on but we just can't score. We need to bury those opportunities."

The Senators scored three times in the second, including twice on the power play. Heatley opened the scoring at 5:44 with a wrist shot from the along the boards just seconds after Gerber made a stop off Boston forward Phil Kessel.

A little more than five minutes later, Heatley beat Auld while on the power play with another wrist shot, this time as he stood on the face-off circle to the left of the Boston goalie.

With less than three minutes to play in the period and the Senators again on the power play, Spezza used his long reach to sweep a rebound past Auld, who had stopped the original shot from Heatley.

Heatley scored into an empty net to complete the hat trick.

The Senators finished 2-for-3 with the man advantage while the Bruins were 0-for-5.
