On a night full of questions and anxiety, one thing was certain: Simone Biles is ready for the Olympics.
Biles finished first overall at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Sunday night in San Jose, California to earn an automatic spot on the women's Olympic gymnastics team.
The 19-year-old was her normal, dominant self, leaving no doubt about her place as the country's top female gymnast.
The four remaining members were named by the selection committee immediately following the trials. After deliberation, the committee decided that the team will be:
- Simone Biles
- Aly Raisman
- Gabby Douglas
- Laurie Hernandez
- Madison Kocian
Biles, who has won four straight U.S. championships and three straight world championships, will be the prohibitive favorite to win gold in Rio.
Douglas came in with something to prove after falling on the balance beam on Day 1 of the trials. She fell on the beam once again on Sunday while finishing seventh, but she did enough in other areas to convince the committee that she belonged on the squad.
Douglas, 20, is the first reigning all-around gold medalist to return to the next games since Nadia Comaneci in 1980. She and Raisman, 22, became the first U.S. women's gymnasts to make back-to-back Olympic teams since 2000.
MyKayla Skinner, Ragan Smith and Ashton Locklear were named as alternates.
The Rio Olympics begin with the opening ceremony on Aug. 5, and run through Aug. 21.
