Arsenal and Manchester City eliminated as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich advance to Champions League semifinals

On yet another drama filled night, Real Madrid outlasted Man City after penalties

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich booked their spots in the UEFA Champions League semifinals on Wednesday, respectively ousting Manchester City and Arsenal to do so.

The two sides are now slated to play each other when the competition resumes in two weeks' time, while Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund make up the semifinalists on the other side of the bracket.

Wednesday's scores

• Manchester City 1, Real Madrid 1 (teams tied 4-4 on aggregate, Real Madrid advance 4-3 on penalties)
• Bayern Munich 1, Arsenal 0 (Bayern advance 3-2 on aggregate)

Madrid advance on penalties

After last week's 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid took an early lead at the Etihad Stadium when Rodrygo scored in the 12th minute. They spent much of the game absorbing City's pressure and eventually conceded in the 76th minute, when Kevin De Bruyne scored to send the match to extra time.

City dominated again in extra time but neither side could break the deadlock, so the tie was decided on a penalty shootout. Though Ederson made a stop and converted his spotkick, it was Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin who was the hero after he made two saves to send his side to the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.

Bayern beat Arsenal

The teams played to a fairly even but goalless first half and things stayed the same way in the second half until Joshua Kimmich's 63rd minute header gave Bayern the lead. The goal effectively knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails and allowed Bayern to rack up shot after shot as they raced to the finish line and though a second goal never came, it was enough for them to claim a 3-2 aggregate advantage.

Halftime of extra time

The game state hasn't changed much - City are still in charge of this one, boasting more than 70% of possession and four shots to Real Madrid's one. It's clear there are a lot of tired legs, though, and so the precision in front of goal hasn't been there. There hasn't been a single shot on target, though Rudiger's shot just before the break was the lone positive for Madrid. He ended up sending the ball over the bar, though.
