It appears losing to Portland State has cost Dan McCarney his job.

North Texas announced that McCarney has been "relieved of his duties" following a 66-7 loss to Portland State on Saturday.

"This is a really tough decision, but after a complete evaluation of the University of North Texas football program we have decided to make a change at head coach," said athletic director Rick Villarreal in a statement. "I will always cherish my relationship with Coach McCarney, and he's done nothing but great things for us in his time here, but we felt like this was the best thing we needed to do for the program moving forward."

Today's game was North Texas' homecoming game, though the Mean Green were actually a 3.5-point underdog to Portland State going into the game.

Still, it's one thing to be an underdog, it's another thing to lose to an FCS school by 59 points on homecoming.

McCarney was in his fifth season at North Texas. Following Saturday's loss, he was 22-32. ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy reports that offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Chris Cosh will serve as "co-interim coaches."
