Berard helps Jackets beat former club for first win

CBS wire reports

CHICAGO -- Bryan Berard had cause to celebrate his return to Chicago on Sunday night.

The Columbus defenseman scored a second-period goal, then set up Jody Shelley's eventual game-winner, and the Blue Jackets held on to defeat the Blackhawks 3-2 for their first win of the season.

Berard played for Chicago in 2003-04, but his contract wasn't renewed following the conclusion of the NHL lockout. He felt no remorse in helping beat the Blackhawks, who like the Blue Jackets are now 1-2-0.

"It definitely puts a little extra spice on it, but it was just nice to get the first win -- that's the most important thing," Berard said. "It gets us on the right track. We have a big four-game road trip coming up."

Jason Chimera also scored for Columbus, which had just three goals in its first two games. Chimera was acquired in a trade from Phoenix on Saturday. He was picked up along with Cale Hulse and Mike Rupp for Geoff Sanderson and Tim Jackman.

"Obviously the player personnel movement of the last few days probably gave us a boost," Denis said. "Chimmy gave us a huge boost on his first shift scoring a big goal and getting us going there."

Columbus coach Gerard Gallant also was impressed by Chimera.

"He got here late last night and played his first game with his new teammates," Gallant said. "He was excited and the guys were really happy for him.

"It (the trade) gives our team a different outlook, a lot bigger team."

Blackhawks rookie Pavel Vorobiev scored twice for the second straight game and Nikolai Khabibulin made 24 saves. Khabibulin admitted he's not yet in the form he showed in backstopping Tampa Bay to the Stanley Cup in 2004.

"Of the three games I've played so far, I thought I felt the best tonight," Khabibulin said. "Obviously, I'm not close to where I want to be."

Chimera gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead just 4:31 in. As he reached the Chicago blue line, Chimera took a long pass from Manny Malhotra, cut around defenseman Jassen Cullimore and beat Khabibulin on the glove side.

Although the Blue Jackets jumped out to an 8-0 shots advantage at the 8-minute mark, Chicago generated chances late in the period thanks to three power plays. Both teams had 12 shots after 20 minutes.

Vorobiev tied it 1 all with 4:41 left in the first.

After Denis stopped Vorobiev's initial shot from right wing, Tyler Arnason fed the rebound out from behind the net to Vorobiev, who scored from just beyond the crease.

Berard gave Columbus a 2-1 lead at 6:24 of the second with a screened power-play goal from the point.

Shelly made it 3-1 at 8:50 of the period when he drove unchecked to the net and popped in a rebound of Berard's shot from the point.

Vorobiev cut it to 3-2 with a power-play goal at 5:32 of the third. After faking Denis to the ice, he fired in a high shot from the right circle.

Columbus converted one of four power plays. Chicago went 1-for-8.

  • Chicago LW Eric Daze missed his second straight game with a sore back. Blackhawks D Adrian Aucoin sat out with a sore groin. Both are day to day.
  • Blackhawks D Jaroslav Spacek returned after missing Chicago's first two games because of sore ribs.
  • Columbus LW Rick Nash remains out because of a sprained ankle. He was injured on Sept. 14 and played in only part of the Blue Jackets' season-opening loss to Washington last Wednesday. He is day to day.
