Bayern Munich vs. Manchester City score: Erling Haaland scores, Pep Guardiola's men cruise to semis with draw

Manchester City, as expected, are through to the UEFA Champions League semifinals after drawing Bayern Munich on Wednesday, 1-1. Pep Guardiola's men advanced 4-1 on aggregate and will now face titleholders Real Madrid in the semifinals next month. City faced Real in the semis last season, blowing a lead at the Santiago Bernabeu before falling in extra time.

The winner of that tie will take on either AC Milan or Inter in the June 10 final in Istanbul.

As for this one, Bayern had their chances early on and nearly scored through two fine looks from Leroy Sane, but the first was a golden chance in the box as the former City man sent the ball wide of the frame. The match looked done and dusted when City got a penalty kicks in the first half, but Erling Haaland's attempt ended up over the bar. The Norwegian would make up for it though, finishing calmly on the counter in the second half to end any chance of a Bayern comeback. Bayern added a late penalty kick goal from Joshua Kimmich.

With this result, City once again move to within 180 minutes of their second UCL final. The club have never won the competition, reaching the final once in 2021, losing to Chelsea 1-0. Real, meanwhile, have won a record 14 UCL titles.

Bayern find the net via Tel ... but he's offisde

Offside is actually called on Coman initially..as his shot rebounds and falls to Tel's feet, but it's called back. Not that it mattered.

57' Goal City! Haaland!

That will do it! Haaland scores on the counter, and this one is over! City lead 1-0 in the game and 4-0 on aggregate, and we are going to get City vs. Real Madrid once again in the UCL semis. De Bruyne does well to play Haaland through, and he gets past Upamecano and finishes!

Second half is underway

First 15 minutes will determine how this match carries on. If Bayern can't get the early goal, then this one is done and dusted early, just as Goretzka loses the ball with an unnecessary flair pass in the middle of the pitch.

18' UFFF! Red card?!!?!

Wait a minute! Upamecano is shown a red card for taking down Haaland as the last man, but the ref signals offside after the play ends. That is a huge decision.

18' Very good from Kimmich

Right after Sane's miss chance, City go on the counter as De Bruyne looks to play a ball out wide that Kimmich intercepts with a well-timed challenge.

What a chance!!!

Oh goodness! Musiala plays Leroy Sane through on goal, and he beats Ederson but also beats the post, sending it wide! How did he miss that? Bullet dodged by Manchester City as Sane cannot believe it!

2' Decent start for Bayern

The ball has been in City's defensive half for pretty much the entirety of the first two minutes. Lots of excites and pressure from the home side, knowing that they need an early goal to get back into this one.

Five mintues until kickoff

Expect a fast start to the match as Bayern needs a goal but they'll need to focus on defense too as one more goal by City can end the tie.

A quick look at the mood in Germany

How can Bayern get back into this tie?

With City running back a lineup that ran riot in the first leg, the German side has a key name back in the attack, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Already with four goals in Champions League play, Choupo-Moting is someone who shows up in big moments and could make a difference in the match. If Bayern scores an early goal, things could get interesting and the lineup is configured to get him the ball. As long as he's fed, he knows what to do with his chances.

Tuchel on this second leg

"We will see if there are such things as miracles," he said. "I would like to accept the challenge. But we need a good mix of realism and belief that anything is possible if we play at our absolute best. It is our task to ignite a spark among the crowd."

Lineup reaction

Bayern: Nothing too crazy there. Leroy Sane gets the start while Sadio Mane doesn't after the latter reportedly punched the German after the first leg of this match. Joao Cancelo gets the start against this parent club and will be tasked with getting high and creating in attack.

City: Exactly what we expected with John Stones in as a defensive midfield who could shift to the backline defensively, especially with the club looking to protect the three-goal lead. Erling Haaland, of course, starts up top, and if he finds the net, this one is likely over.

Score prediction

By Jonathan Johnson

Bayern to put up more of a fight than they did in leg one but for the damage to have already been done in Manchester. Expect City to do just enough here and for Haaland to likely be their match winner as they march on to the semis. Pick: Bayern 0, City 1 (0-4 on aggregate).

Player to watch

By Jonathan Johnson

Bayern: Kingsley Coman. The France international was clutch in Paris with the only goal of the game which unlocked a tricky round of 16 tie and he has a knack for scoring important goals. With Mane and Sane's bust-up potentially a bit too fresh to see both starting, the 26-year-old could prove key to any faint hopes that Tuchel has of salvaging a semifinal berth. In order to do so, service to Choupo Moting will be absolutely crucial and even then, it is still no guarantee of the big win which is required.

City: Erling Haaland. All eyes will be on the Norwegian hitman once again as he looks to add to his impressive scoring record as he attempts to chase down Cristiano Ronaldo's record from 2013-14 of 17 goals in one single edition. On 11 already, a potential two-legged semifinal and possibly even a final awaits if the 22-year-old and his teammates can get the job done here -- plenty of opportunity to add to an already impressive tally.

Picks

One matchup to watch: Jamal Musiala vs. Rodri. Realistically, Bayern's chances of advancing are not great. On top of the 3-0 thumping they received in the opening leg, there was also the in-fighting between Leroy Sane and Sadio Mane which probably poisoned the atmosphere a bit. For the Germans to stand any chance of getting out of this mess, they will need a strong showing from Musiala. Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, Rodri was in strong form last week and could be an obstacle again here.

Most likely to score a goal: Erling Haaland. Are we really kidding ourselves that the Norwegian superstar will not add to his goal and assist from the opening leg? Haaland is in ominous form right now and if City are to score in Bavaria, then the Scandinavian is the most likely source.

Man of the Match pick: Ruben Dias. Bayern are not exactly bursting with attacking potency at present, but they still possess enough of a threat to at least attempt a comeback. The Portugal international's form will dictate whether or not Thomas Tuchel's side can even hope to beat Ederson between the sticks once let alone three times to just force the tie beyond 180 minutes.

Match prediction: Bayern 0-1 City (0-4). Do not expect a blowout like the opening leg, but this one should be much tighter. Tuchel probably has more work on his hands than first thought, so the hosts should be prepared for a struggle with City doing enough to grind out a narrow win here to complete a convincing overall aggregate success.

Storylines

By Jonathan Johnson

Bayern: Tuchel has confirmed that Sadio Mane will be back in the squad after his altercation with Leroy Sane. Key attacking focal point Eric Maxim Choupo Moting missed the opening leg through injury but could yet make it for this one. Manuel Neuer, Lucas Hernandez, Paul Wanner and Gabriel Marusic are all out injured.

Possible Bayern XI: Sommer; Pavard, Upamecano, De Ligt, Davies; Kimmich (c), Goretzka; Sane, Musiala, Coman; Choupo-Moting.

City: Phil Foden remains out while Guardiola rotated his players for the win over Leicester City this past weekend. Haaland is going for a Premier League record of the most UCL goals in a season since Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy's 12 back in 2002-03 and the Norway international needs just one more to level the Dutchman's tally.

Possible City XI: Ederson; Akanji, Dias, Ake; Stones, Rodri; Silva, Gundogan (c), De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland.

Last meeting

The Champions League was previously Bayern's most consistent arena with 18 points from 18 in Group C under Nagelsmann to finish eight points clear of Inter Milan in second. Despite beating PSG on the road and then at home with two of three goals scored by ex-Parisiens in a 3-0 aggregate success, Tuchel took over and oversaw the heavy opening leg defeat in Manchester which sees them trail by three goals here.

City topped Group G with 14 points from a possible 18, finishing five points ahead of Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in a group which also featured Sevilla and Copenhagen. Inspired by merciless Haaland, Guardiola's men pummelled RB Leipzig 8-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 with a 7-0 thrashing seeing Haaland score five. City were good value for their 3-0 first leg win and are now heavy favorites to advance to the semifinals in Germany this midweek.

As you'll recall, City won the first leg 3-0 just last week and have more than a foot into the quarterfinals, knowing that even a two-goal defeat will be enough to advance.
