Inter vs. AC Milan score: Marcus Thuram leads the Nerazzurri to their fifth straight win over crosstown rivals

It's Inter again. The Nerazzurri won 5-1, their fifth Derby della Madonnina in 2023 after an entertaining clash and a game dominated from the first minutes. Former AS Roma attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored the opening goal after five minutes, thanks to an individual effort by an impressive Marcus Thuram, who has made the Inter fans forget Romelu Lukaku in only a few games. Inter flowed forward again and scored the second goal in the first half with Thuram taking an incredible strike from the left corner of the box in the 38th minute. The teams went into the dressing room at 2-0.

Nothing changed between the two sides in the second half with Inter in control of the game, until Rafael Leao made it 2-1 just before the hour mark in the best moment of the Rossoneri. But Simone Inzaghi's side immediately reacted and scored again with Mkhitaryan. The game was already over, but former AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu scored the fourth one thanks to a penalty for a foul on Lautaro Martinez and then Davide Frattesi closed out the scoring in stoppage time.

Inter win the Derby again, the fifth one in a row and Inzaghi's side and now lead the Serie A table with twelve points, two more than Juventus who today won against Lazio. AC Milan need to react and will have the chance to do it already this Tuesday against Newcastle for the opening game of the UEFA Champions League group stage (you can catch all the action on Paramount+).

The fifth one in a row

Inter managed to win their fifth Derby della Madonnina in a row, after the Nerazzurri won the one in the Supercoppa Italiana last season, the one in February and the UEFA Champions League semifinals last season. In those five derbies, Inter scored twelve goals and only conceded once, Rafael Leao's goal on Saturday. On top of that, Inter are in a great run this year as the Nerazzurri won all the four games in this Serie A season, scoring 13 goals and only conceding that one goal to Leao. Inzaghi's side are currently at the top of the table with twelve points, two more than Juventus who are now second in the league with ten points.

Thuram is the new Big Rom

While AS Roma signed Romelu Lukaku on a season-loan from Chelsea, Inter decided to sign free agent Marcus Thuram, who became the hero of the day at San Siro alongside Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Thuram showed all his skills, his pace, his strength and also scored an incredible goal in the first half of the game. Thuram is not Lukaku, but he's working to overcome some of differences between the two strikers. It looks like he's improving game after game, and this is just what Inter need right now.

What went wrong for Pioli

Despite the credit Inzaghi deserves for putting Inter in such a dominant position, there are obviously things that AC Milan need to improve because it can't be a coincidence that Inter won all of the the last five games and, most importantly, that the Rossoneri only scored once over that stretch. Pioli's side tried to play their game this time, but it didn't work out as Inter scored after only five minutes. AC Milan changed a lot this summer, and it probably takes more time for the signings such as Christian Pulisic to adapt in these kinds of tense games. There is a lot of frustration and disappointment after the loss, but for Pioli there is no time to think about what didn't work because on Tuesday it's already time for some Champions League action, as the Rossoneri will host Newcastle.

Inter started off well the Derby today and had at least two chances to score the second goal of the game, but the Nerazzurri are only up by one goal so far. AC Milan are struggling to create chances and to play as they did until now in the first games of the season. But it's a long way to go...

Ten minutes to go...

The game is about to start, the tension is growing minute by minute. Last season Inter won four derbies out of five, while the Rossoneri only won the first game back in September 2022. Inter managed to win both ties of the 2022-23 Champions League semifinals, before losing to Manchester City the final in Istanbul.
