2024 NCAA Women's Tournament scores, highlights: South Carolina, LSU roll; Ohio State stunned

Round 2 of the 2024 NCAA Women's Tournament started with an absolute shocker on Sunday. No. 7 seed Duke rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat an Ohio State team with legitimate Final Four aspirations. It's the Buckeyes' second loss in Columbus all season, and it'll send Duke to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2018.

Reigan Richardson was outstanding in the Blue Devils' upset win. The Charlotte, N.C. native tied a career-high with 28 points, adding seven rebounds and three steals. She's now recorded at least 25 points and seven rebounds in each of Duke's first two NCAA Tournament games, as she also led a Blue Devils comeback win against Richmond on Friday.

South Carolina is on a mission to become the 10th team in NCAA women's basketball history to win a national title after an undefeated season, and it's off to an excellent start. The Gamecocks crushed North Carolina, 88-41, in a second-round game that had to have sent chills down the spines of the coaches aiming to take down the No. 1 overall seed. MiLaysia Fulwiley scored a game-high 20 points off the bench for South Carolina, yer her defensive impact was as important as she recorded three steals and three blocks.

Reigning champion LSU collected a huge win of its own over Middle Tennessee. The Tigers trailed by as much as seven before mounting a furious second-half effort, outscoring the Blue Raiders by 31 over the final 20 minutes. Flau'jae Johnson led the Tigers with 21 points, while Angel Reese was just behind with 20.

Many exciting moments took place Sunday, but none more than the ending of Baylor's 75-72 win over Virginia Tech. The Bears led for most of the game, then Virginia Tech star Georgia Amoore cut the Hokies' deficit to one with just 15 seconds remaining. However, the Baylor defense and Jada Walker's 28-point performance were a little too much for Virginia Tech to handle. The Hokies were competing without three-time ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Kitley, who tore her ACL earlier this month.

The last matchup of the night features No. 2 seed Stanford and No. 7 seed Iowa State. Tara VanDerveer's Cardinal have long been a West Coast powerhouse, but they can't be too careful as they were upset by Ole Miss in the Round of 32 last year. The Cyclones earned their ticket to the second round with a 20-point comeback win over Maryland -- the second-largest comeback in women's tournament history. Freshman Audi Crooks made a statement with 40 points on 90% shooting, giving her the most ever points by a freshman in a NCAA Tournament game.

(2) Stanford 87, (7) Iowa State 81 | Final OT

This was not a game for the weak of heart. It was a tight battle throughout and for a moment it looked like Stanford was going to miss its second consecutive Sweet 16. Stanford star Cameron Brink -- the Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year -- fouled out late in the fourth quarter, and Iowa State was not slowing down.

However, Kiki Iriafen had a different plan. She registered a career-high 41 points and completed an impressive double-double with 16 rebounds. The Cyclones put up a solid effort, and this time they were led by senior Emily Ryan with a career-best 36 points.

(5) Baylor 75, (4) Virginia Tech 72

The Bears are back in the Sweet 16 after a two-year absence. Baylor led for most of the game but Virginia Tech hung around and gave us a nail-biting ending.

Virginia Tech trailed 69-70 with 20 seconds remaining in the game after freshman center Clara Strack's jumper gave them a chance of survival. However, Baylor guard Jada Walker responded with an and-one to give her team a more comfortable 73-69 advantage. The Hokies called a timeout and, as expected, the ball went to Georgia Amoore who hit a three-pointer that once again had the Bears sweating... except maybe Walker. She was cold as ice and gave her team two more points from the charity line with six seconds on the clock.

Amoore tried to get a game-tying 3-pointer but Baylor had a foul to give and acted quickly. There was about a second remaining, which was going to require a catch-and-shoot from Virginia Tech. Amoore did get the ball but time wasn't on her side and the Bears didn't allow her a proper look.

Walker finished the night with a career-high 28 points. Matilda Eke led Virginia Tech with 19 points, while Strack and Amoore followed closely with 18 points each.

(1) Texas 65, (8) Alabama 54 | Final

Texas held the lead from start to finish and now the Longhorns are heading to their third Sweet 16 in the last four years. As a team, they won the battle in the paint 38-24. Junior Aaliyah Moore and freshman Madison Booker led Vic Schaefer's squad with 21 points each. Moore completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. The Longhorns also knew how to get the free throw line and went 16-for-21 from there. Alabama only got nine attempts from the charity line.

The Texas defense was tough, registering a total of 11 blocks and four of those coming from senior forward Taylor Jones. Despite the difficulties, three Alabama players still reached double figures led by senior guard Sarah Ashlee with 17 points.

(3) Oregon State 61, (6) Nebraska 51 | Final

Talk about exceeding expectations. Oregon State was picked to finish 12th in the Pac-12 conference, but now the Beavers are advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019. Junior guard Talia Von Oelhoffen led the Oregon State offense with 19 points and eight assists. She put up a season-high of five 3-pointers in the process. Sophomore forward Timea Gardiner was also a top contributor with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Senior guard Jaz Shelley was the only double-digit scorer for Nebraska with 10 points. The Beavers' defense held her to just 3-for-10 from the field and the entire Nebraska team to 31.3% shooting.

(3) LSU 83, (11) Middle Tennessee 56 | Final

The Tigers finally woke up. LSU shook off a sluggish first half -- and a sluggish opening-round effort against Rice -- to dominate Middle Tennessee over the final 20 minutes, punching its ticket to the Sweet 16 in the process. After falling behind by as much as seven Sunday, LSU outscored Middle Tennessee by 31 in the second half, giving the Tigers some much-needed momentum as they prepare for a Sweet 16 matchup against either UCLA or Creighton. Flau'jae Johnson and Angel Reese led LSU with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Reese added 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, though her efficiency struggles continued to the tune of a 6-of-17 shooting line.

(5) Colorado 56, (4) Kansas State 49 | Final

The Buffaloes outlasted the Wildcats after a low-scoring slugfest of a fourth quarter. Defense was Colorado's calling card all afternoon, as seven players -- including all five starters -- tallied at least one steal. Aaronette Vonleh had a whopping seven steals, adding nine points, eight rebounds and a block. Kansas State star Ayoka Lee had a quiet offensive outing with just 10 points, but she collected six blocks and 11 rebounds to make a significant impact elsewhere. The Buffaloes will next play either Caitlin Clark and Iowa or West Virginia.

(1) South Carolina 88, (8) North Carolina 41 | Final

The Gamecocks asserted their dominance with an absurdly lopsided win over rival North Carolina. Five different Gamecocks scored in double figures, including reserves MiLaysia Fulwiley, Chloe Kitts and Tessa Johnson. Fulwiley, the star freshman who seems to produce a highlight every minute she's on the floor, led the way on both ends with 20 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Kamilla Cardoso, who made her 2024 NCAA Women's Tournament debut after a suspension kept her out of the opening round, recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Gamecocks will now face either Oklahoma or Indiana in the Sweet 16.

(7) Duke 75, (2) Ohio State 63 | Final

A popular Final Four pick has been eliminated in the Round of 32. Duke rallied back from a 16-point deficit to stun Ohio State in Columbus, where the Buckeyes lost only once in 2023-24 entering Sunday's game. Reigan Richardson was key to the upset win by  scoring 28 points on 11-of-18 from the field, adding seven rebounds and three steals. Fouls and poor 3-point shooting plagued the Buckeyes. Celeste Taylor, Rebeka Mikulasikova and Taylor Thierry all fouled out, while Ohio State went 1-of-11 from deep as a team. The Blue Devils will now face either UConn or Syracuse in the Sweet 16.

Stanford struggling with foul trouble

Stanford's Kiki Iriafen got her third foul with 1:43 left in the third quarter as the score was tied 48-48. She traded places with Cameron Brink on the bench, who had sat out earlier in the quarter because of her own foul trouble. However, Brink quickly got her fourth foul and is now back on the bench. Iriafen is back in.

(7) Iowa State 33, (2) Stanford 31 | Halftime

This is tight contest so far with neither team finding a double-digit lead yet. Iowa State freshman Audi Crooks -- who went 18-for-20 on her way to 40 points in the first round -- has not been as hot tonight, shooting just 2-for-10 form the field in the first 20 minutes. However, the Cyclones are in good hands with Emily Ryan hitting three treys while leading Iowa State's offense with 15 points.

Meanwhile, Stanford's Kiki Iriafen is already flirting with a double-double with 16 points and seven rebounds. Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year Cameron Brink has been quiet offensively with just two points so far.
