It seems Arkansas State and Michael Dyer were just never meant to be.
Arkansas State announced that it had dismissed Dyer from the team for a violation of team rules.
“I am truly disappointed that it didn’t work out here at ASU for Mike,” said coach Gus Malzahn in a release. “I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future.”
Saying things "didn't work out" is only half the story for Dyer and Arkansas State.
Dyer was Auburn's leading rusher in 2011, finishing the season with 1,242 yards and 10 touchdowns. This after being named the MVP of Auburn's victory over Oregon in the BCS Title game following the 2010 season.
Things started going downhill after last season ended, though.
A handgun that had been used by four former Auburn football players in an armed robbery was traced to Dyer, and though he was never charged, Dyer admitted to a jury that he had been smoking marijuana with his four teammates before the robbery occurred. He even admitted to lending Antonio Goodwin.
Not surprisingly, Dyer was then suspended for Auburn's trip to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl and announced he be following offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn to Arkansas State shortly after.
Only Dyer's petition for immediate eligibility was denied by the NCAA, meaning he'd have had to sit out the 2012 season anyway.
Now he won't be playing football at Arkansas State in 2012 or any other season.
