Notre Dame players can now earn the number on their jersey this year.

Speaking with WSTB, Irish coach Brian Kelly said he has come up with a merit-based point system that will allow players to go out an earn numbers 1 through 9 based on the work they do on and off the field during the week. Per Kelly, the idea came about when defensive linemen prospects began asking him if they could wear single digits while Kelly was on the recruiting trail.

"I go out on the road, and we're closing deals with guys to come to Notre Dame. And the first question is 'Can I get a No. 4, or No. 5, or No. 6?' And, of course, now there are defensive linemen asking for single-digit numbers," Kelly said. "It got to the point where I said 'what we're going to do is compete for single digits.'"

Kelly continued that numbers 1 through 9 will be up for grabs, but that No. 1 will specifically be held for the coaches to decide. Currently, no players on Notre Dame's roster have been assigned No. 1.

"Let's put together a point system where we can track our players off the field and on the field. And with this point system, we can award the single-digit numbers and make it a merit system. Except for No. 1. No. 1 we're going to hand out from week-to-week," Kelly added. "That's going to be the player that exemplifies himself both on and off the field in a manner that represents all the things that we want our Notre Dame football player to represent."

The constant switching of numbers is going to be a nightmare for film review, especially come draft time. A guy might be No. 3 one week, No. 9 the next and No. 50 later in the season. However, this is a cool incentive for the players. Ultimately, that's what matters.
