Junior quarterback Danny O’Brien will start for Wisconsin on Sept. 1 against Northwen Iowa, coach Bret Bielema announced Sunday night on his Twitter account.

The Maryland-transfer had been battling senior Curt Phillips along with redshirt freshman Joel Stave for the starting duties.

Bielema later tweeted: "Both Curt and Joel had great camps as well, we are very fortunate that we have three QBs that can play winning football for us.”

O’Brien hadn’t thrown an interception all camp until last Friday when linebacker Ethan Armstrong nabbed one in 7-on-7 drills.

“First one of camp and it was almost 300 throws,” O’Brien said to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  “I was trying not to talk about or think about it. The other quarterbacks would always bring it up at try and jinx me.”

O’Brien, a two-year starter at Maryland and former ACC freshman of the year, has thrown 18 career interceptions in 22 games for the Terrapins. He threw 10 interceptions last year compared to only seven touchdowns in what was a season marred by turmoil under first-year coach Randy Edsall.
