2020 Masters leaderboard breakdown, scores: Justin Thomas looks poised to roll as Tiger Woods impresses

Breaking down the top of the Masters leaderboard through the first day of action at Augusta National

The first day of the 2020 Masters was nothing if not eventful. What started with a three-hour inclement weather delay gave way to a scoring frenzy throughout the morning and afternoon as soft, attackable conditions saw more than two dozen golfers post under-par rounds on the day. Due to the late start and daylight saving time, some golfers were unable to finish their first rounds with action continuing Friday morning.

As it stands, Paul Casey leads the field at 7 under after posting a bogey-free 65, marking his best opening round score at a major in his career. Behind him, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson sit T2 at 5 under, followed by a lengthy list of names -- among them, reigning champion Tiger Woods at 4 under.

Woods is coming off his unlikely Masters win a year ago, and he entered the week having stumbled throughout most of 2020. But he posted his first bogey-free round at a major championship in his last 105 attempts in Round 1, finishing just three strokes off the lead. Woods tied his low opening round at a Masters by posting a 4-under 68. 

Let's break down the top of the Masters leaderboard through one day at Augusta National.

2020 Masters leaderboard

1. Paul Casey (-7): In his 66th career major championship appearance, Casey strutted to his best opening-round score ever in such an event. The Englishman turned in a clean scorecard at 7 under topped by an eagle on the par-5 2nd hole. Casey, 43, has not won a major championship in his career but had a career-best T4 finish at Augusta in 2016. He's off to his best-ever start at the Masters.

T2. Webb Simpson (-5): Coming off his best career finish at the Masters a year ago (T5), Simpson picked up where he left off on Thursday by opening with a 5-under 67. He managed to minimize mistakes, turning in a bogey-free card while taking advantage of the par-5 2nd hole with an eagle like Casey. 

T2. Xander Schauffele (-5): Schauffele opened his round red hot out of the gate, posting three birdies in his first three holes. He never completely cooled, either. Schauffele bogeyed two of his next seven holes before finishing with four bogeys in his final eight. Only Casey and Schauffele posted 32 or better on the second nine.

T2. Justin Thomas (-5): On Friday, we may be talking about Thomas as the post-Round 1 leader. After getting a late jump in the afternoon flight, Thomas got off to a torrent start, posting a first-nine score of 4 under and carding a birdie on No. 10 before play was called. He sits just two strokes off Casey with eight holes left to play.

T5. Tiger Woods, Patrick Reed and six others (-4): Woods' last two major championship outings resulted in either missed cuts or sub top-30 finishes, so what he did Thursday was nothing short of spectacular (and somewhat unexpected). Opening on the second nine, he took advantage of both par 5s and had a nice, crisp, bogey-free round to get his week started.

T13. Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Dustin Johnson and four others (-3): This was a nice rally for Rahm after a slow start. He bogeyed two of his first three holes and looked out of sorts out of the gate, visibly showing frustration. But he finished the second nine at 3 under and played the first nine at 2 under. Finau had an up-and-down Round 1 capped by an eagle on the par-5 15th. Fowler wasn't able to finish, though he took advantage of the soft conditions with a bogey-free first 11 holes to get to 3 under.

T21. Bryson DeChambeau and 12 others (-2): DeChambeau, the Masters favorite entering the day, hit two provisional balls through three holes as he struggled early to find his distance and control. But the double bogey he posted on No. 13 after a wild goose chase to find his bush-bound ball was a turning point as he played the final 14 holes at 4 under. He hit 8 of 14 fairways on the day and averaged 334 yards driving, better than the average field distance by nearly 50 yards.

T51. Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and 11 others (E): There was plenty of fuss made about DeChambeau's length off the tees coming into this week, but McIlroy has thus far averaged 352 yards per drive through nine holes (to DeChambeau's 334 through 18). He's even on the round. Morikawa, the 2020 PGA Championship winner, finds himself in the same spot on the leaderboard through nine as well. After a birdie on No. 2, he alternated between bogey and birdie on 5, 6 and 7.

T72. Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and 8 others (+2): Koepka withdrew from the U.S. Open earlier this fall because of lingering knee and hip injuries from which he hoped to recover. Thus far, he's looked less than sharp in his bid to win his first Masters, posting bogeys on No. 7 and No. 10 prior to play being called. Spieth, the 2015 Masters champion, finished off his round by playing his final nine at even-par.

Nice finish on the day for Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters winner. He turned in birdies in five of his final six to get to 4 under on the day.
