The Cardinals have signed free agent infielder Ronny Cedeno, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported Monday.

Cedeno, 29, hit .259/.332/.410 (104 OPS+) in 186 plate appearances with the Mets last season. The right-hander owns a career .247/.290/.357 (71 OPS+) line over eight years between the Cubs, Mariners, Pirates and Mets.

Cedeno is primarily a shortstop, having made 531 of his 615 career starts there. He also has experience at second base -- 75 starts -- and a few games sprinkled in at third base, left field and center field. The Cardinals will likely make him their primary defensive replacement behind shortstop Rafael Furcal and second baseman Daniel Descalso.
