England will face Germany in the 2022 UEFA Women's Euro championship final on Sunday as the two titans of the women's game battle for the title of Europe's best. Germany are coming off a 2-1 semifinal win against France where German captain Alexandra Popp scored a brace. Meanwhile, the tournament hosts England defeated Sweden in a lopsided 4-0 victory that marks the return of the Lionesses to the Euros final for the first time since 2009 when they also faced Germany.

Germany has the series advantage over the Lionesses, 21-4-2, including that 2009 6-2 Euro cup final win, and England is on the hunt to bring the trophy home for their first time in their team's history. Despite Germany holding the series advantage, England have recent form on their side, as the Lionesses defeated Germany 3-1 during the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup in February.

Storylines

Germany: The Germans are heading to their record 9th Euro final, and Die Nationalelf are undefeated in their previous eight appearances in the tournament final. Head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and her team are are in remarkable form now having faced a variety of challenges this tournament against Denmark, Spain, Finland, Austria, and now France. 

Prior to the semifinal, Germany out scored their opposition 11-0, with goalkeeper Merle Frohms earning four clean sheets. The team's organized defensive abilities have been a strength for them throughout the competition thanks to the center back duo of Kathrin Hendrich and Marina Hegering. Meanwhile, Popp leads the team with six goals, including the semifinal game winner against France.

The team made some adjustments during the semifinal with winger Klara Buhl unavailable due to Covid protocol, and there is a possibility she could return for the final, but the inclusion of Jule Brand in the front line only showed off Germany's depth across their roster this tournament. Expect the midfield to continue their dominance in the middle third of the pitch, with Lena Oberdorf leading the way by winning the ball and connecting with her teammates. 

England: The tournament hosts have done an excellent job of shaking off the nerves and pressures that come with carrying the hopes of a nation, but the Lionesses will face their biggest challenge yet when they take on Germany. Head coach Sarina Wiegman has the team playing with a renewed sense of confidence, and the Lionesses will need that when they play in front of 90,000 people. 

The teams blowout semifinal victory against Sweden saw England sustain a consistent level of pressure in the opening 25 minutes of the game, and they have shown throughout the tournament that they are a squad that can score without excessive time on the ball. They will need to execute similarly if they intend to concede a bit of possession against Germany.

Beth Mead leads the team with most goals scored this competition with six, level with Popp in the golden boot race heading into the final. Along with Mead, the team has found some success attacking along the flank with their goals typically built along the right side this tournament. So look for Lucy Bronze and Georgia Stanway to continue their collaboration with Mead in the final.
