Juventus vs. Lyon score: Cristiano Ronaldo, Juve come up short in Champions League first leg

Lyon pulled off an upset over Juventus on Wednesday in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League matchup. The difference was a first half goal from the French side that was scored when Juve was caught off guard.

As the scoreline might indicate, this result was not the case of Lyon absolutely dominating Juventus. The Italian side got threatened plenty of times, first with numerous offensive pushes that quieted down the crowd at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Lyon had its chances, but they were few and far between.

One of those chances came in the first half when Houssem Aouar cut his way through the left side of the defense and found Lucas Tousart with a slight cross. Tousart had to jump so he could volley in the goal for the opener.

The rest of the match for the Serie A squad was characterized by wasted opportunities. Just minutes after the Lyon goal, Ronaldo was brought down just outside the penalty box for what could have been an excellent opportunity for the superstar to score. Instead, the free kick went to his teammate Miralem Pjanić, who hit the wall -- a theme of sorts with Juve set pieces. To go through the rest of those wasted chances would be an exercise in monotony.

Juve's biggest threats only came late, when the seemingly impenetrable fortress of Lyon's defense started to break down after spending most of the second half frustrating Ronaldo and company. Juventus players kept looking for whistles to no avail. Ronaldo tried to make it seem as though he was pushed in the back while going after a cross, and the official shook his head on the plea. The next chance was a disallowed goal from Dybala, who was a whole leg offside when he received the ball.

It was at that point that things started to unravel in the match, as the two sides had a flop-off in the hopes that the ref would call something in their favor. But nothing went right for Juventus, which will need a victory during the March 17 second leg to advance to the quarterfinals.

Nearly a second for Lyon!

Dubious yellow for Lyon

29' It's not dubious in the sense that it was too harsh, but perhaps too light. Lyon's Marcelo is given just a yellow for appearing to hit Dybala right in the throat. Needless to say, the commentators are aghast at the decision, both from Marcelo and the official. The Argentinian player appears to be fine.

An odd shot choice from Lyon

24' Fernando Marçal takes the goodwill his club have earned from the home crowd and crushed a bit of it away. After a corner kick heads to about 30 yards outside of the box, he launches one from way, way, way too deep and it goes flying to the moon.

Lyon with serious pressure!

22' Lyon's Karl Toko Ekambi sneaks out of the pack during a corner kick and nearly heads in a shot on goal. Unlucky for him as the ball bounces off the cross bar. The ball returns to Lyon, who attempt a couple other pushes, but to no avail. The result is inconsequential for the home crowd, which has been roaring since the crossbar started shaking. The French side is on top of the moment.

Juventus with opportunities

18' The Italian side were at least in position to have two shots on goal, with neither effort really yielding any result or threat. The first was a free kick after Lyon needlessly gave one away just outside of the box. Rather than take it, Ronaldo was sent to the box to try and head it in, where he was kept down with a fair amount of contact. The ensuing corner that came after the free kick also rolled harmlessly out of bounds, this time with Lyon getting possession.

So close for Juventus!

4' Cristiano Ronaldo whipped a cross towards the far post which looked like it was deflected by Jason Denayer. The ref awards a goal kick, but Cuadrado should have done better to get to the cross, which was an absolute beauty from the Portuguese superstar.
