Liverpool vs. Manchester United score, stats: Reds produce seven goals as Gakpo, Salah and Nunez record braces

The tide is shifting in the Champions League race as Liverpool are up to fifth in the table following an absolute thrashing of rival Manchester United on Sunday, 7-0. A brace from Mohamed Salah saw him become Liverpool's top-ever Premier League scorer with 129 goals passing Robbie Fowler's 128. Ian Rush is still Liverpool's top-ever league scorer with 229 goals. Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo also scored two goals each while Roberto Firmino got the seventh off the bench.

Coming into the match, a United result felt like a formality despite the game taking place at Anfield but it was clear from the first kick that Liverpool were up for the match. United were hanging on by a thread early due to impressive defending by Lisandro Martinez but once Gakpo opened the scoring before the close of the first half, Liverpool couldn't be stopped in a six-goal second half.

United were unbeaten in their last 11 matches in all competitions before going to Anfield but everything fell apart. The victory gives Liverpool quite a boost in goal difference as the Reds now have the third best in the league after the match. While there were concerns over how the team has performed in year seven under Jurgen Klopp, matches like this show that the team still has what it takes and that the new-look front three are gaining an understanding with each.

It's a concerning loss for a Manchester United side gaining plaudits for their mentality when the match was winnable but after conceding a second goal after the break, heads dropped and players switched off while Liverpool drove forward. This was recognized by ten Hag as well.

"I think we played a decent first half. One mistake in the organization just before halftime. Second half it was just not us. It was not our standards. We didn't play as a team. It was unprofessional. Yes [I am angry]. Definitely," ten Hag said after the match. "I am surprised because I have seen the last weeks and months this team is resilient and has a winning attitude. Second half we didn't have a winning attitude at all. We didn't stick to the plan and we didn't do our jobs. We didn't track back and it was really unprofessional."

Losing matches like this can deal a psychological blow to teams and now ten Hag will need to make sure that doesn't happen.

Here are some numbers behind the match:

3: Times that Liverpool have scored seven or more goals this season

If you're looking for Liverpool statistical records, this game doesn't even catch their largest Premier League margin of victory which was a 9-0 defeat of Bournemouth back in August of 2022. A boom or bust attack, the Reds have also put seven past Rangers in Champions League before finally scoring seven against Manchester United Sunday. These results are why even though Liverpool have lost games by multiple goals to teams like Wolverhampton, they still have the third-best goal difference in the Premier League.

+9: Goal differential over Tottenham

Liverpool have surged up the table and with a game in hand on Tottenham, the Reds can be back in the top four by April if matches continue to break their way. Taking advantage of losses by both Tottenham and Newcastle, this could be a shift that sees Liverpool back in the top four sooner than later as they are now just three points back. But this result gives them such a leg up in goal differential, and that could be the ultimate tiebreaker come season's end. Left out of the conversation as recently as February when they lost to Wolves, Klopp has ensured that his team maintains focus on the prize at hand.

3: Players with braces in the match

Unlocking Nunez and Gakpo has been a challenge for Klopp this season but against United, he struck a balance with excellence. Interchanging from the wing and playing centrally, Nunez and Gakpo had a great understanding of space while blitzing Diogo Dalot down the flanks with ease. Both looking to Salah when needed and taking their shots, the duo showed that Liverpool's attack should be feared if given space.

United didn't help themselves turning the ball over in key areas but we've seen the Liverpool attack squander good chances in the past. If those days are behind them, look out.

What a performance

Liverpool were magical turning over Manchester United at will and scoring when they wanted. Salah became the top league scorer in the Premier League era with his 129th goal. Also laying on two assists while Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo registered braces as well, Liverpool got a statement victory that they needed. Manchester United were undefeated in 11 games prior to running into Liverpool's big Red Machine and they weren't able to find their footing as Liverpool's press kept them off balance.

Bobby, Bobby Firmino everyone!

He may be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season but Firmuino scores Liverpool's seventh goal and the Reds are doing the unthinkable.

Wow. DARWIN

Liverpool have hit the high fives as a set piece led to a Darwin Nunez goal. The away end is emptying and it's a party at Anfield while Liverpool's Champions League hopes are very well alive.

MOHAMED SALAH HAVE A DAY!

It's an absolute collapse from United as they go from taking a corner kick to conceding a magnificent strike to Salah at the other end. Liverpool needed a performance like this in the worst way and Salah's 128 Liverpool goal puts him joint top for the most goals in club history.

When things are going well, they all go well

Alisson slips on the pitch with an oncoming Bruno Fernandes bearing down but United couldn't turn that into an attacking chance. It's all coming up Liverpool this half as United ready changes.

GAKPO!! A 3-0 lead for Liverpool!

Wow, this game has turned. Salah was into space and with the attention of Shaw and Martinez on him, Salah is able to slide it to Gakpo for the finish.

We've reached the half

Liverpool needed that as their excellent first half was in danger of having nothing to show for it before Gakpo's strike. The Reds could jump Newcastle in the table with a victory but the second half has been a strong point for Manchester United this season. The Red Devils showed their impact on counter attacks and set plays so with tweaks, there will be more goals in the second half.

The match is getting chippy

Fabinho gets a yellow card for a challenge and United gets another chance from a free kick. This one is much better with Casemiro hitting the back of the net but he's flagged offside.

The tightrope act continues

Dalot is beaten by Roberton and Nunez but Nunez's ball across the face of goal only found United defenders.  It's an attack that sums up Liverpool's day so far. The Reds have been excellent but not where it counts in making David De Gea work with none of their seven shots forcing a save.

An excellent tie

Backed by their home fans Liverpool are displaying a high energy attack but Manchester United has been up for the challenge being in the right place at the right time. Liverpool needs to be more careful in possession given how dangerous United has been on the counter attack and with the adjustments that ten Hag has made at halftime during matches this season.

Lisandro Martinez has been excellent

Clearing an Andrew Robertson shot that was destined for goal before also denying Darwin Nunez on a follow up attempt, Martinez has been in the right place at the right time for the Red Devils to contain Liverpool's dominant start to the match.

One attack, one corner

There's United showing their danger as Antony flashes a shot that Alisson saves. It leads to a corner which Liverpool are able to clear but with Dalot leading the counter, that's how quickly things can change facing this in form United side.

Robertson wins Liverpool a corner

It's another game where Manchester United are off to a slow start as the Reds are asking all of the questions. But the corner led to nothing. Given how United has come back in matches as of late if Liverpool can't turn this early advantage into an early goal, they could remain on the losing side.

Are Manchester United becoming "mentality monsters"?

James Benge went through how a term coined by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp can now describe Manchester United appropriately.

The word mentality was used on seven different occasions in the eight minute broadcast section of Erik ten Hag's press conference before Manchester United's trip to Liverpool on Sunday. Given that his side had battled back from a goal down to knock West Ham out of the FA Cup in midweek, it was perhaps no wonder that Ten Hag was asked if he had developed his own mentality monsters. The Dutchman was not biting, his response anodyne enough to perhaps keep him off the back pages. "Our mentality is, in general, very good. We have many leaders who set the standards, who control the standards, who correct if necessary. We are happy with this process but it can always be better."

It is easy to see why that particular question reared itself ahead of Sunday's match. The 3-1 victory on Wednesday was the sixth occasion this season where United have been trailing only to secure victory. Three of those have come since the World Cup, most notably the stirring fightbacks to overcome first Manchester City and then Barcelona in the Europa League (you can catch the entirety of Manchester United's Europa League run on Paramount+). Such results are hardwired into the DNA of Manchester United with their history littered with too many examples to count: Nou Camp 1999, Fergie time, "lads it's Tottenham." It is not enough to win and to win in style, victory must be secured in the most dramatic of fashions.

How Liverpool will attack the match

Virgil van Dijk makes his 150th appearance for the club as Cody Gakpo will lead the line with Diogo Jota needing to settle for a place on the bench. Moving Bajcetic to the bench after he has helped improve Liverpool's defense will be something to watch.

Starters: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold; Konate; Van Dijk; Robertson; Fabinho; Henderson; Elliott; Salah; Nunez; Gakpo

Reserves: Kelleher; Milner; Firmino; Jones; Jota; Tsimikas; Carvalho; Matip; Bajcetic

Manchester United team news

Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho's fitness will be assessed ahead of the game. Shaw took a knock in the League Cup triumph while Sancho has been ill and both missed the midweek win over West Ham United in the FA Cup: "We hope it is not too bad -- we have to see how it develops until Sunday," said Ten Hag. Alejandro Garnacho could start after his heroics against the Hammers while Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Fred and Marcus Rashford all helped from the bench. Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen are out long-term, and Ten Hag is handling Anthony Martial's return with caution: "I will give a prospective timeline or an expectation about that. Let him do his work, as several times now, he has been back and he drops back too quickly. We must give him the time and I hope he is on board but first, in this moment, we are doing really well in this set-up. When he is available, we will have another option, a good option. Let us give him the time and we will see when he is back. Then we will be happy because we have a quality option extra for the rest of the season."

Liverpool team news

Joe Gomez is a doubt with a hamstring injury as is Arthur Melo. Luis Diaz is likely to still be out for a little while longer as is the case with Thiago Alcantara. Calvin Ramsay is a long-term absentee with a knee problem and there is no known return date yet. Naby Keita is also a doubt but Darwin Nunez should be able to continue in attack after being fit enough to face Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Looking at some predicted lineups for the match

Jota can make the difference for Liverpool as their best defense will be attacking in the match while Erik ten Hag will have decisions to make at right back and on the wing. Wan-Bissaka is the safer option defensively while Garnacho has had some moments of magic that could continue in this match.

Liverpool: Alisson; Andrew Robertson; Virgil van Dijk; Ibrahima Konate; Trent Alexander-Arnold; Fabinho; Jordan Henderson; Stefan Bajcetic; Mohamed Salah; Diogo Jota; Darwin Nunez

Manchester United: David De Gea; Luke Shaw; Lisandro Martinez; Raphael Varane; Aaron Wan-Bissaka; Fred; Casemiro; Marcus Rashford; Bruno Fernandes; Alejandro Garnacho; Wout Weghorst
