Manchester City vs. Manchester United score: Erling Haaland, Phil Foden record hat tricks to crush Red Devils

Getty Images

Hat tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden lifted Manchester City to an emphatic 6-3 win over Manchester United on Sunday in Premier League action. City were in full flow from start to finish as Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne carved the United team apart, setting up the attack to feast in the Manchester derby.

The Red Devils would get a consolation goal in the second half via Antony, but it wouldn't be enough to spark a comeback when they were already behind by four heading into the break. Cristiano Ronaldo began the match on the bench and remained there as an unused substitute. Anthony Martial scored two late goals for the visitors, one being a penalty kick.

Haaland now has 14 Premier League goals as he takes his scoring streak in all competitions to eight consecutive matches for City. The Norway international has also now become the first player to score a hat trick in three consecutive home matches in league history. City stand alone as the only team in the league without a loss and move within one point behind Arsenal in the league table. The nine goals in the match also make this the highest scoring Manchester derby in history.

Jack Grealish may not have registered a goal or an assist in the match but his dribbles created chaos for Manchester United. Drawing Diogo Dalot into a yellow card less than two minutes into the match, Grealish ensured that he and Foden would have plenty of space to operate with the defender being cautious while giving the United fullbacks fits. City's opener came via Dalot's side as he couldn't get tight enough to an attacker due to already being on a yellow.

Tyrell Malacia also received a yellow card for bringing down Foden within 25 minutes and ended up getting hooked at halftime for Luke Shaw. Pep Guardiola won't be happy that his team lost the clean sheet in the second half but both of Martial's goals came after City made four substitutions, so the score does flatter United in a flat performance.

Here are a few takeaways from the match:

Hat trick Haaland

With 14 goals in eight league matches for Manchester City, Haaland is now on pace for 66 league goals which is unlike anything that we've ever seen. While it's unlikely that he'll reach that target because as more matches pass, City will likely take control of the title race, he could come close to breaking the record for most goals in a Premier League season before the World Cup.

Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer scored the most goals in a 42-match season with 34 while Mohamed Salah has the record for a 38-match season with 32, but it might not matter. The record for Premier League goals in a debut season is also 30 which Haaland is almost halfway to matching in only eight games. With 30 more to go, it seems like all he needs to do is stay healthy and records will fall. Looking around the league, Haaland has also scored more goals than 14 teams while also equalling Brighton's output on the season.

Can't judge a team against Manchester City

A derby loss always hurts but City have been brushing teams to the side as their plus-20 goal difference is eight goals better than Arsenal's plus-12. United boss Erik ten Hag will need to make changes to his defense, but he can't take this as a match that says everything needs to change as City are a different breed.

The team was better with Casemiro on the pitch and this can spark him being included from the start of matches instead of coming off the bench. Martial's brace will also be promising as he offers an alternative option to Jadon Sancho, who only created two chances and lost the ball on each of his dribbles in the match. Depth is a necessity for Manchester United and as the team gets healthier, ten Hag will have chances to make changes to instill his style in upcoming matches.

The xG battle is more flattering to Manchester United as City won that by 3.37 to 1.72 but for a pressing team, only winning six tackles and allowing 22 shots can't be acceptable. It starts with midfield but a loss to Manchester City isn't one that says everything needs to change because they do this to most teams in the Premier League.

Losing Kyle Walker may hurt

A linchpin in City's defensive setup, right back Kyle Walker was withdrawn in the 41st minute after suffering an injury and was replaced by Sergio Gomez. Walker has been an important part of City's attack by helping orchestrate the buildup while he also keeps the defense steady as the center-back partnerships rotate around him. City allowed all three goals without him on the pitch with one being a penalty conceded by Joao Cancelo filling in on his side of the pitch. The severity of Walker's injury is unknown at the moment but with Rodri injured, Aymeric Laporte just returning to fitness and John Stones also hurt, Guardiola could be down to bare bones in defense ahead of playing four matches in the next 11 days. The last match of that run is an away trip to Liverpool as well so Guardiola may want some bubble wrap for his team.

What a win for City

While the second half was one to forget, you can forgive Manchester City for taking their feet off the gas after being ahead by four at the break. Anthony Martial's return could be key for Manchester United after he scored a brace from the bench but that couldn't match hat tricks from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland to bring the match within reach.

Martial from the spot

He fires home an emphatic penalty to bring United within three goals as Cancelo clipped his ankle to concede the penalty. At least United have a 3-2 scoring advantage in the second half but it won't be enough after being in such a deep hole heading into the break.

October 2, 2022, 2:50 PM

Anthony Martial is back and hits the back of the net

Not a single celebration from Manchester United as bringing the match within 6-2 isn't anything that the team should be happy about. Pep Guardiola will be disappointed with the performance from his defense in the second half.

That's some duo leading the line

Some context on Haaland's scoring

The Norwegian now has 14 Premier League goals this season. Chelsea have 10, Manchester United nine. Indeed they are two of the 14 teams who have scored fewer than Haaland so far this season. After eight games he has more Premier League career goals than Luka Modric and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Another 252 and he will have caught up with Alan Shearer. Reckon he can do it by the end of the season?

It's a double hat trick! This time Phil Foden gets his

Shaw kept him onside as Foden looks to keep up with Haaland.

Manchester United has improved in the second half...

.. It's a consolation but the team has created more chances even scoring a goal in the second period but at what point will ten Hag start Casemiro in league matches instead of bringing him off of the bench?

October 2, 2022, 2:31 PM

Hat trick Haaland!

There's no stopping Haaland as he scores when he wants. City are in top form but conceding five should cause worry for Manchester United.

Keane pulls no punches

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was utterly scathing of the current incumbents of the shirt he wore with such distinction in United's golden era. He's not one to pull his punches at the best of times but this feels remarkably extreme, even for Keane.

"If we needed a reminder of how good Man City are, we're getting it," he said on Sky Sports. "But oh my god, Man Utd. It's like the game is too big for them. I almost can't believe what I'm watching.

"Maybe a lack of belief is behind it. It's been easy for Man City.  As poor as it's been defensively, their passing has been sloppy, there are gaps everywhere., the lads in midfield are getting pulled everywhere.

"I can't believe how bad Man Utd have been. It's about pride and personality, but they're not showing it."

Changes coming for Manchester United

Luke Shaw will enter for Malacia who is on a yellow card but the change that isn't being made -- bringing on Casemiro -- is interesting as well. Can United get a consolation goal?

October 2, 2022, 2:05 PM

And make that a brace for Foden

Haaland assists this one as Foden runs into the box for a poachers finish. It's 4-0 before the half as things couldn't be going any worse for ten Hag.

October 2, 2022, 1:45 PM

It's not all good for City though

Kyle Walker will leave the match with an injury being replaced by Sergio Gomez. With Guardiola already having a bench short on defensive reinforcements, another injury isn't something that was needed today.

I had just begun forming an idea about a post on why getting that second goal conceded might not be the worst news for United as we've so often seen City drop down a few gears and cruise to victory. But then that goal there looked like the hosts testing themselves, trying to score the most extravagant goal they can. That wasn't a bad effort!

October 2, 2022, 1:40 PM

Blink and you just might miss it, 3-0 City

It's Haaland again as he has a brace. These yellows have made a difference as Jack Grealish had all the space in the world to set that up and Varane couldn't keep up to keep Haaland from scoring.

October 2, 2022, 1:39 PM

His first derby goal

It was barely over the line but Erling Haaland has put Manchester City ahead 2-0. United tried to block the shot from inside De Gea's net but it wasn't enough. Only 35 minutes in but it feels like this match could be over.

October 2, 2022, 1:36 PM

Struggling Sancho

The winger is one of many players who is just finding the on ball pressure coming from City to be too much to bear. He is trying, unsuccessfully, to thread the needles and get United into positions where they can attack but when he does so he often ends up handing possession to the opposition in the heart of the pitch.

October 2, 2022, 1:26 PM

Add Malacia to the book

Another United giveaway leads to another chance for City. Malacia comments a foul to make sure it didn't end in a goal but Manchester United now have both fullbacks on yellow cards, they could be down to ten before the half.

October 2, 2022, 1:25 PM

Can't come much closer to scoring than that!

Gundogan was overtop of a free kick for Manchester City and rattles De Gea's post. It's a game of inches but United again can consider themselves lucky that City aren't ahead 3-0 within 20 minutes.

October 2, 2022, 1:21 PM

Luke Shaw is warming up already

Could Erik ten Hag be looking to make an early sub in the match? Considering Dalot's early yellow and United's inability to contain Manchester City within the first 15 minutes, changes could be coming before this match gets out of hand.

October 2, 2022, 1:15 PM

It was coming, 1-0 Manchester City

There goes Phil Foden following a cross from Bernardo Silva. What a hit from the English star. He goes with a front-post run and curls a ball past defender Raphael Varane and into the net. De Gea had no chance. Not sure where the United defense was but this could get ugly quickly.

October 2, 2022, 1:09 PM

Like a cheap suit

City are all over United, a flurry of early chances as first De Gea then the all action McTominay deny De Bruyne and Silva on the goal line. There was plenty of talk beforehand about the pressure that would be on the City defense but for United to actually exert any they need to have the ball. That looks a pretty unlikely prospect so far.

October 2, 2022, 1:08 PM

How did that stay out of the net?

It's Grealish again creating chances as Haaland's header went across the face of goal finding no one. United can consider themselves lucky that the match is still level but they're dropping too deep already giving City too much room to work with.

October 2, 2022, 1:07 PM

Didn't take long for the first yellow card

Inside two minutes Diogo Dalot has been carded for upending Jack Grealish. Looking to prevent this derby from getting out of hand early it seems but that yellow could loom large with Grealish's threat on the dribble.

October 2, 2022, 1:04 PM

Five minutes until kickoff

Manchester City need points to keep pace with Arsenal atop the league while Manchester United want a victory in a massive derby match.

October 2, 2022, 12:54 PM

The plan for Manchester United

City's lineup will leave them susceptible to counter attacking soccer if Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes can link play with the front three during the match. Marcus Rashford being fit enough to start is critical for Erik ten Hag because, without him, Ronaldo wouldn't have the speed atop the line to make City pay on the break but how United will stop Erling Haaland will be the biggest question today. Already taking the league by storm scoring in seven consecutive matches for Manchester City, Haaland has an astonishing 14 goals in 10 appearances. Can Martinez and Varane stop him from hitting 15?
