Drew Smyly hits the disabled list for the Tigers, Angels outfielder Torii Hunter will miss Saturday's game, and could Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano be on the move?

  • Tigers pitcher Drew Smyly has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right intercostal strain, tweeted CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler. The Tigers have called up Luis Marte to take Smyly's spot on the roster, and Knobler also tweeted that Jacob Turner is expected to get the start for Detroit on Tuesday. 
  • Smyly was 4-3 in 15 starts with a 4.42 ERA. He struck out 75 batters in 79.1 innings, including 10 Royals in his last start on July 6, a 4-2 Tigers win. 
  • In nine games with the Tigers this season, Marte has a 3.71 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. 
  • Turner, the Tigers' first-round pick, ninth overall, in 2009, has spent most of the 2012 season with Triple-A Toledo, and is 4-2 in 16 starts with a 3.16 ERA. He's struck out only 40 batters in 62.2 innings, but has only allowed 52 hits. Turner made one start for the Tigers back on June 21, against St. Louis, and pitched five innings, giving up four hits and only one earned run. He struck out three, but walked five. 
  • Angels right fielder Torii Hunter has a tight groin that will keep him out of Saturday's action, tweeted MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. Consider him day-to-day. 
  • Angels also activated right-handed pitcher Jerome Williams from the DL, after optioning Brad Mills back to Triple-A. Williams is 6-5 in 12 starts this season, with a 4.46 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Opponents are hitting .273 against Williams, who starts Saturday afternoon against the Yankees. 
  • As the Angels deal with injuries, they may recall Garrett Richards to start on Tuesday against the Tigers, tweeted Mike DiGiovanna of The Los Angeles Times.
  • The Angels are in the mix for the services of Zack Greinke, and Los Angeles players would love it if the team could add Greinke to the mix, reported  Danny Knobler. 
  • News dropped late Friday night, if you missed it, that Brian Fuentes will likely join the St. Louis Cardinals, as reported by CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. Fuentes was released by Oakland earlier in the week, and a number of teams have shown interest. 
  • Forget about the money owed to him, because Alfonso Soriano is one of the best hitters available on the market, tweeted Heyman. 
  • Soriano's hitting .275/.331/.503 on the season, with 17 home runs and 53 RBI. After a very slow start, Soriano has rebounded impressively, leaving April's .503 OPS in the past. In May, Soriano had an OPS of .944, with seven home runs and 17 RBI. In June, he did even better, putting up a .951 OPS, with eight home runs and 18 RBI. So far in July, Soriano is batting .290/.333/.581, with two home runs and seven RBI. 
  • His numbers are good, but it's Soriano's contract that will make it hard for Chicago to trade him. He's owed $18 million in 2013 and 2014, and has a full no-trade clause. 
  • C.J. Nitkowski has signed a minor-league deal with the Mets, he tweeted. 
  • Brendan Ryan would make sense for the Atlanta Braves, tweeted ESPN's Buster Olney. Ryan's batting only .184/.284/.272, but those numbers are better than Jack Wilson's, who has taken over at shortstop in Andrelton Simmons' absence due to injury.
  • One final note on Justin Upton: Oakland is on his no-trade list, tweeted FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
