What to Know

Pittsburgh is 3-1 against Syracuse since 2015, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. Pittsburgh's bye week comes to an end as they meet up with Syracuse at 7 p.m. ET at Carrier Dome. Coming off of a win even when the odds were against them, the Panthers have to be feeling especially confident now that the spread is in their favor.

Pittsburgh decided to play defense against itself two weeks ago, but the team still came out ahead despite 140 yards in penalties. They had just enough and edged out Duke 33-30.

Meanwhile, after flying high against Holy Cross three weeks ago, Syracuse came back down to earth. Syracuse didn't finish too far behind, but the squad still lost 16-10 to NC State last Thursday. Syracuse's low-scoring loss was the unsatisfying follow-up to their high-scoring outing the matchup before.

Pittsburgh's win lifted them to 4-2 while Syracuse's defeat dropped them down to 3-3. A pair of defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Syracuse enters the contest with 20 sacks, good for 14th best in the nation. But the Panthers are even better: they rank second in the league when it comes to sacks, with 27 on the season. With that kind of ball pressure, don't be surprised if there are a lot of short passes in this one.
