The Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday announced that star outfielder Christian Yelich has been placed on the injured list following a positive test for the COVID-19 virus. The positive test occurs despite Yelich receiving the single-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine in April.

"Yelich, who was fully vaccinated, began developing mild symptoms on Monday and alerted team officials, president of baseball operations David Stearns said. The Brewers' charter flight to Pittsburgh was delayed from Monday evening to Tuesday morning while players and staff underwent testing and contact tracing."
After that contact tracing, infielder Jace Peterson was also placed on the COVID IL. Yelich will be sidelined a minimum of 10 days and cannot return to the active roster until symptoms subside. Peterson will be out at least seven days. According to Stearns, all other Brewers players and staff tested negative.
Yelich, in his age-29 season, has batted .235/.382/.367 with six home runs and seven stolen bases in 67 games. He remains a strong on-base threat in the Milwaukee lineup, but since the start of the 2020 season he's failed to produce at his 2018-19 level, when he won the NL MVP and finished runner-up the following year. Yelich previously spent time on the IL twice this season because of back issues.
To fill the two spots on the active roster, the Brewers have activated outfielder Lorenzo Cain from the IL and recalled infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes from Triple-A. The first-place Brewers enter Tuesday's schedule with a record of 58-42 and a seven-game lead over the Reds in the NL Central.
