In trying to add another quarterback to the roster, the Cowboys have spent time in the last day or so with plenty of free agent signal-callers, including the likes of Tyler Thigpen, Caleb Hanie, John Skelton and David Carr.
None of those guys apparently are good enough.
Instead, the Cowboys have signed 41-year-old Jon Kitna to play as Kyle Orton's backup if Tony Romo can't play vs. the Eagles on Sunday. The move was first reported by the Fort Worth Star Telegram and the team made it official later on Tuesday.
Strange but true, because Dallas signed Orton after Kitna decided to retire at the end of 2011 (!).
Kitna actually started nine games for the Cowboys in 2010 and played well, going 4-5 while completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 2,365 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. But remember, he hasn't thrown an NFL pass in 27 months.
Perhaps, though, it's kind of a no-risk signing.
Look at it this way, Kitna knows the Cowboys offense, so that's good. And if he's forced to play, well, Dallas is already in bad shape then.
