Thiessen announced his retirement via his personal Twitter account Thursday.
Thiessen appeared in five career NHL games, all coming as a Penguin during the 2011-12 campaign. He recorded a .909 save percentage and a 2.51 GAA in 290 career AHL games.

Brad Thiessen: Released from PTO
Thiessen was cut by the Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
Thiessen has bounced around, suiting up in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, Finnish League and collegiate hockey. After being let go by Columbus, the 31-year-old may need to return to Europe to extend his professional career.

Blue Jackets' Brad Thiessen: Likely to begin season as No. 3 netminder
Thiessen is expected to begin the regular season as the starting goalie for AHL Cleveland and the No. 3 on the Blue Jackets' depth chart, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
With Anton Forsberg getting dealt to Chicago as part of the Artemi Panarin/Brandon Saad trade, the Jackets have an opening for a steady veteran hand like Thiessen to provide some depth if Sergei Bobrovsky or Joonas Korpisalo gets hurt. The 31-year-old Thiessen's only NHL experience came during a brief five-game stint with the Penguins in 2011-12, but over the last two seasons he's looked sharp in 34 games for the AHL Monsters, posting a 2.09 GAA and .922 save percentage with six shutouts.

Blue Jackets' Brad Thiessen: Promoted to AHL
Thiessen has been called up to AHL Cleveland from the ECHL, The Columbus Dispatch reports.
He'll serve as Cleveland's backup after Curtis McElhinney was lost on waivers to the Maple Leafs. It would take a lot of bad luck in Columbus for Thiessen to find himself in the NHL, but the career minor leaguer did have a good run last season for the Calder Cup-winning Monsters, posting a 1.95 GAA and .929 save percentage in 22 games, including three shutouts.
