Michael Blunden: Bound for Europe
Blunden secured a one-year contract with HC Bolzano (EBEL).
Since being drafted by the Blackhawks with the 43rd overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft, Blunden has split time between the NHL and AHL for the past 13 seasons. Despite decent minor-league numbers (45 points in 112 games), the winger only saw action in three games for Ottawa over the past two years. The Toronto native will now head overseas to continue his professional career.

This is strictly a depth move for the Senators, as Mark Stone (knee), Derick Brassard (undisclosed) and Nate Thompson (lower body) will not play against Nashville. Blunden hasn't produced anything in two appearances this year for Ottawa, making him all but irrelevant in terms of fantasy, unless you really need to gamble with a cheap option in a daily situation.

Blunden was ticketed back to the minors with Mike Hoffman having returned from a lower-body injury as well as the Senators acquiring Alex Burrows from Vancouver in an early trade Monday. Blunden has made a habit of shuffling between an organization's ranks each season, making him rather useless in the fantasy realm.

It's always interesting to see which players an organization turns to when injuries strike. Blunden enters the picture as a 30-year-old journeyman with only 125 NHL games under his belt. Still, the parent club is dealing with maladies to power-play weapons Mike Hoffman (lower body) and Mark Stone (neck), so the extra depth is vital.

Blunden was assigned to AHL Binghamton on Wednesday, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
Blunden will have to officially go through waivers Thursday in order to be sent down. It's not an overly surprising move by the Sens, but disappointing for the 29-year-old. The winger has struggled to find a home over the span of his career, appearing with Chicago, Columbus, Montreal and Tampa Bay over nine years.

Senators' Michael Blunden: Inks two-year deal with Ottawa
Blunden signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Senators on Friday.
Blunden appeared in 20 games with the Lightning last season, notching five points (three goals, two assists) while averaging just 8:39 of ice time. The 6-foot-4 winger also appeared in 49 games with Tampa Bay's AHL affiliate in 2015-16, tallying a respectable 38 points (21 goals, 17 assists) over that span. The 2005 second-round pick will likely once again split time between the AHL and NHL with his new club in 2016-17.

Lightning's Michael Blunden: Back in action Tuesday

Blunden's call-up is a response to reports that star forward Tyler Johnson (undisclosed) will miss at least a week. At 6-foot-4, 217 pounds, Blunden has ideal size though he hasn't made much of an impact in the NHL, despite Chicago selecting him with a second-round pick in 2005. In fact, Blunden has just eight points in 106 career games at hockey's highest level of competition.
