Argentina and Uruguay played to a 0-0 draw in World Cup qualifying on Thursday night in Montevideo, a result that doesn't really help or hurt either in its pursuit of a spot at Russia 2018. Jorge Sampaoli's first important match in charge of Argentina saw him go with three at the back and a trio in attack of Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala and Mauro Icardi, but the visitors created very little in a match that saw more hard tackles than quality on the ball.

Luis Suarez left the match injured in the second half and looks doubtful for next week's match at Paraguay, but in the end it was a result that won't hurt either team.

The result sees Uruguay remain in third with 24 points and Argentina in fifth with 23, and the top four teams automatically qualify for the cup while the fifth-place team plays in a two-match playoff.
