While PSG started off with a nice 2-0 win against Real Sociedad in the Champions League round of 16, the most unexpected result so far came from Rome where Lazio managed to beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico. The German side finished with 17 shots but did not put a single one on frame in the defeat.

In Paris, after a quite disappointing first half, PSG managed to score twice in the second with Kylian Mbappe and Bradley Barcola. Luis Enrique's team is now well-positioned to advance to the quarterfinals if the Parisians are able to keep their advantage in the second leg. However, the most surprising result of the night was the one of Lazio who won 1-0 at home against Bayern Munich thanks to a penalty scored by Ciro Immobile.

Wednesday's results

PSG 2, Real Sociedad 0.
Lazio 1, Bayern Munich 0.

FT: PSG 2, Sociedad 0

The hosts made hard work of it but got there in the end. Mbappe and Barcola with big goals to put Les Parisiens in control. PSG and Luis Enrique need to beware this Basque side in the return leg, though. They might be 500 minutes or more without a goal now, but they will not go down without a fight.

FT: Lazio 1, Bayern Munich 0

Huge win for Lazio! Sarri's team won 1-0 the first leg of the Round of 16 at the Olimpico against Bayern Munich thanks to a penalty scored by Ciro Immobile. The German giants continue their negative streak after losing the Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen over the weekend and lost a back to back match in all competitions for the first time since 2019. Thomas Tuchel's job is now in danger...

PSG seek a third

It has looked most likely that the home side add another goal rather than Sociedad pulling one back. Asensio and Kolo Muani the latest to have gone close-ish for PSG with the latter firing wide after a break from the edge of the home penalty area.

GOAL - Lazio 1, Bayern 0

Immobile scores the penalty, Lazio ahead! Neuer couldn't do much against one of the best goal scorers around. Bayern only have twenty minutes to equalize but with ten men against eleven after the red card of Upamecano.

Penalty Lazio!

69' Red card for Upamecano as well for a fault on Isaksen inside the box.. this is a turning moment of the game!

Mbappe off the bar!

This is all PSG suddenly. Mbappe sees one deflected onto the bar and Sociedad can only hold on right now. What a turnaround in the space of 5 minutes or so. Totally different game. The Basques are now fouling at will to keep Les Parisiens at bay.

PSG 1-0 Sociedad!

Mbappe with the breakthrough! The ball breaks kindly after a PSG corner is helped on from Dembele via Marquinhos and the French superstar roofs the ball to put the home side ahead. That goal has lifted the Parc des Princes crowd form its slumber!

PSG pressure

The hosts are turning the screw again after a good spell for Sociedad early in the second half. Mbappe shot deflected wide just now as PSG try to pepper the visiting goal. Traore has taken a knock and is receiving treatment.

Lazio have a big chance!

49' Big chance for the home team, with Isaksen's attempt that was saved by Neuer! Great start for Lazio, but they missed a huge one here.

Back underway!

The teams are back in action in both Rome and Paris -- no changes by any of the sides so far.

HT: PSG 0, Sociedad 0

Not at all what we expected from the opening 45. Sociedad arguably the better side and went very close through Merino late in the first half. PSG more accurate with their openings, but the Basque side do not look like a team short on goals as they are of late. Big 45 coming up in Paris!

Merino off the bar!

Sociedad go close as Merino strikes one which pings off the bar. PSG are living on the edge after failing to find the net this first half. Luis Enrique with work to do at half time!

HT: Lazio 0, Bayern Munich 0

Still 0-0 after the first half of the game between Lazio and Bayern Munich. The German side had a better start of the match, and had two big chances with Kimmich and Muller, but failed to score the opener. Lazio, slowly, found more rhythm and despite not having shots on target were at least keeping more the ball towards the end of the first 45 minutes.

Barcola heads over

PSG improving over the last 5-10 minutes since Dembele's effort and Barcola just headed over after a period of sustained pressure. Hakimi's effort deflected into Barcola's path and his header went over after a Dembele corner almost caught Remiro out in the Sociedad goal. Foul on Dembele by Le Normand who is booked.

Muller's free kick goes out

31' Huge chance for the visitors with Thomas Muller's free kick but his attempt goes wide on the right side of Lazio's goalkeeper Provedel. Fifteen minutes to go before the end of the first half...

Sociedad's strong start

For a side that has not scored in four games, the La Liga outfit are certainly not looking shy in Paris so far. A flurry for Sociedad pressure has rattled PSG a little. No efforts on target yet, though, from Alguacil's men. Can they make it tell, though? Dembele lashes an offside effort into the side netting, so the Basques need to be careful still.

Lazio's first attempt

Luis Alberto's shot is the first real chance of the home team that are now trying to find the score after some challenging first minutes of the clash. It looks like Lazio are now keeping more the ball, finally.

Bayern are in control

15' Bayern Munich had a strong start and Lazio are trying to defend at their best, but the German side are definitely in a much better shape in these first minutes of the game. Tuchel's team had at least two big chances to score the opener, while the Biancocelesti are trying to work on the counterattacks, without success up to now.

Hot start in Paris

It looks great in the French capital too! 10 minutes in and PSG have already registered one effort on target and dominating the ball early on. Can the Ligue 1 leaders make first leg home advantage count? Sociedad are not sitting back and flashed a very early one wide. Who will draw first blood? The Basques are certainly pushing for it to be them having just sighted Donnarumma's goal again.

Nice start for Bayern

2' Great start for the visitors that already had their first chance to open the score with Kimmich but the German wasn't able to find the net after a nice play of Sane. Lazio, on the other hand, are playing with Cataldi instead of Vecino, who suffered a muscular injury in the pre-match training and couldn't make it into the starting lineup.

What to know on Lazio vs. Bayern

Lazio will host Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 for the first time since 2021 Wednesday, marking just the third meeting ever between these two clubs. Bayern Munich won both previous matches, defeating Lazio 4-1 in Italy in the first leg and then winning 2-1 at home to advance to the quarterfinals. The side coached by Maurizio Sarri seeks their first quarterfinal appearance since 1999-2000 where they were eliminated by Valencia 5-3 on aggregate. The Italian side is currently eighth in Serie A with 37 points through 23 matches, five points behind Atalanta and the top four.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich finished first in Group A with 16 points from six matches, their sixth straight UCL as group winners. Bayern dropped points for the first time in a group stage since 2020, drawing Copenhagen 0-0 at home, and they hope to bounce back from the humbling 3-0 loss at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

What to know about PSG vs. Sociedad

Paris Saint-Germain return to UEFA Champions League action Wednesday when Real Sociedad visit Parc des Princes in the round of 16 first leg. Luis Enrique's men come into this one off the back of consecutive 3-1 home wins as part of a larger run of seven wins from eight games across all competitions since the start of 2024. As for Imanol Alguacil's side, the big worry is four wins from 10 games in 2024 with two defeats but most alarmingly the last four outings have not even featured a single goal scored. PSG scraped through Group G behind Borussia Dortmund and will now seek to avoid a third consecutive round of 16 exit having reached this stage for the 12th straight edition.

Spanish sides generally tend to prove tricky for Les Parisiens with five eliminations from the last six meetings but the Basque side still look favorable on paper given that this is their second ever appearance at this stage after 2003-04 when they finished second in Group D behind Juventus. This will be PSG and Sociedad's first ever competitive meeting and the Txuri-Urdin last faced Ligue 1 opponents at this stage in Olympique Lyonnais who won both games 1-0 before being eliminated by eventual winners FC Porto.
