Manchester United vs Manchester City score: Pep Guardiola and company out class Red Devils at Old Trafford

Manchester City made the statement they needed, and Manchester United showed they may just need a change in manager. On Saturday, City went to Old Trafford and thoroughly outplayed United, winning 2-0 with two goals in the first half to end any drama in what is often one of the Premier League's most hard fought rivalries. An own goal and a strike by Bernardo Silva lifted the visitors to three points, helping them bounce back from last weekend's shock defeat at home to Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, United have lost four of six in the league, including two of the last three to direct rivals Liverpool and City.

With manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under pressure due to a lack of consistency, this match proved once again that United aren't even close to the level of those truly fit to challenge for the league title. United had just 32.8 percent possession, completing 322 passes to City's 752, and had only one shot on goal from five attempts, while City had 16 shots, putting five on frame.

It all got started just seven minutes in when Eric Bailly knocked a Joao Cancelo cross into his own net in what proved to be the winner:

Then on the brink of half time, Silva managed to somehow sneak this ball past David De Gea to double the score:

United were fortunate that the scoreline was not worse, with Phil Foden hitting the post in the second half, while City somehow also weren't awarded a clear penalty kick.

Cristiano Ronaldo had one stellar volley on frame that was saved well by Ederson, with United doing nothing else at all in attack as the match ended with a roar of boos from a home crown. The win for City pulls them, provisionally, within two points of leaders Chelsea, while United may find themselves 11 points back of first place by the end of the day.

Here are three takeaways:

No possession meant no Ronaldo involvement

Ronaldo was barely involved, recording just 27 touches, the second fewest since his return to the club. He was not able to create a chance and failed to record multiple shots for the first time in the last five games. But that really isn't on him. Not only did United have very little possession, but the midfield's passing was poor as well. Bruno Fernandes completed just 75 percent of his passes and wasn't able to get into space to create. In his last six Premier League games, he had created 29 total chances. In this one, he created zero. If Bruno isn't involved, then Ronaldo likely won't be either. There was no late magic from the Portuguese superstar in this one as his team was outplayed for 90 minutes.

Rodri effortlessly controlled this match

He isn't flashy by any means, but boy is he effective. City's Spanish midfielder Rodri was just dominate with the ball, gracefully spraying it around and keeping the United midfield running. His ability to play the ball with just one touch to the feet of his teammates to open up space continues to be key. He touched the ball 114 times and passed it 105 times, completing 94.3 percent of them. Additionally, he won two-thirds of his duels, one every ball in the air and led his team with 12 recoveries. Quiet but key.

It's probably time for a new manager

I think we've reached a point where it's safe to say United need to move on. Think about it for a second. Here we are entering the November international break, with two of the last three league games seeing United just convincingly outplayed by Liverpool and City. They scored zero goals in those two matches. With Raphael Varane out injured, it's true this is a very different team. But with these performances, the often-needed comebacks against smaller teams and a backline that is just horrid, it feels like the potential of this team is top four at best. When the opposing fans are chanting "five more years" for your manager, you just know you aren't seen as a threat for anything except maybe the League Cup ... which United are no longer even playing in.

If only they had moved earlier for Antonio Conte.

65 percent possession for City and the frustration grows for the home side. United are applying pressure but are having absolutely no luck at all as City nearly make it 3-0 with Phil Foden kissing the right post with a low, powerful effort.

It's Bernardo Silva! He somehow sneaks one in past De Gea at a tight angle! The Red Devils are reeling! 2-0 just before the break!

Just one shot on frame for United

That's all from the Red Devils. Ronaldo's volley on frame in the 26th minute is the only shot on target. City continue to control the ball, defend well and create the majority of the game's chances. United have gotten a bit better but still can't hold the ball consistently, let alone look dangerous.
