WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: Edge outlasts Sheamus in last match of WWE contract

Edge's future is unclear, but Friday was a night to remember for the WWE Hall of Famer. Edge defeated Sheamus in a fantastic televised main event on SmackDown in front of his billed hometown of Toronto.

Friday's show celebrated the 25-year anniversary of Edge's televised WWE debut. The 11-time world champion honored the occasion with his first singles match against Sheamus, a man Edge credited for spurring his return from a career-threatening injury. What's next for Edge is a mystery. The Canadian superstar told ET Canada that Friday's bout was "the last match" on his current contract. Last year, he told the WWE Universe on an episode of Raw that he'd consider retiring in Toronto in 2023.

SmackDown also featured the emergence of a No. 1 contender for the United States championship and the continued re-emergence of the Street Profits under Bobby Lashley's leadership.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

Emotional Edge emerges victorious amid retirement rumors

There were a number of video packages during the program celebrating Edge's career. First was a video featuring WWE superstars John Cena, Natayla and Sami Zayn, among others, thanking and congratulating Edge. Later, a career retrospective was presented that started with a young Edge asking Bret Hart how to break into the business on a talk show.

Edge def. Sheamus via pinfall after landing his signature spear. The first-time encounter between Edge and Sheamus was competitive. Edge played the underdog role, overcoming Sheamus' brute strength with timing and cunning. One of the biggest moments in the match saw Edge hit a spear through the ropes and send Sheamus from the apron crashing ringside. Edge swung the pendulum later by planting Sheamus with a superplex and following through into an Edgeucation.

Determined to one-up his foe, Sheamus turned an avalanche White Noise into a Celtic Cross for a deep two-count. The near fall had Beth Phoenix, Edge's wife, at the edge of her seat. A Sheamus victory seemed certain after he countered a spear with a thudding flying knee and a Brogue Kick, but the Hall of Famer miraculously kicked out. It was ultimately a pair of spears that put Sheamus down for good and gave Edge the victory in his hometown.

Post-match, an emotional Edge took in the crowd's adoration. The 11-time world champ blew a kiss to his wife and two daughters ringside. Phoenix appeared to be on the verge of tears as Edge and Sheamus embraced with a hug.

Edge and Sheamus gave it their all in that match. The pair did a great job last week of pitching the significance of a first-time match that probably wasn't on most fans' radars. Friday's encounter was a great television main event and wouldn't have been out of place on a pay-per-view. Big moves, unique offense, close calls, a decisive finish and palpable emotion. This match had it all. Edge and Phoenix's visible emotion adds a touch of mystery, too. There have been rumors of an impending retirement for Edge but nothing has been publicly confirmed. It'll be interesting to see where the Canadian superstar goes from here. Grade: A
