College Basketball Podcast: Is 15-year-old phenom Emoni Bates really the next Kevin Durant?
Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander also discuss NC State's notice of allegations from the NCAA
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Matt Norlander and I have spent the past few days at the Riverview Park Activities Center watching college basketball coaches watch college basketball prospects at the 24th annual Nike Peach Jam. Many of the best talents from the Class of 2020, 2021 and 2022 are here. It's been a fun week. So Norlander and I got together Saturday morning to discuss it all on a new episode of the CBS Sports Eye on College Basketball Podcast -- but only after we both shared stories about weird dreams we had Friday night.
Then the conversation went like this:
- 15:00: College coaches are living the new recruiting calendar implemented by the NCAA last August for the first time right now -- and the reviews aren't great. As I wrote Friday, most do not like that their opportunity to evaluate at grassroots events has been slashed significantly. So here's the question: Will the NCAA reconsider the changes in advance of next year?
- 40:00: Emoni Bates is a 15-year-old phenom who is already drawing comparisons to Kevin Durant. Is that reasonable or hyperbole? Will he ever actually play college basketball? Should more schools be recruiting him? (FYI: Only Michigan State and Florida State have offered so far.)
- 58:30: NC State released its notice of allegations from the NCAA earlier this week. What does it mean for former coach Mark Gottfried? What does it mean for the NC State program? How should the NCAA go about punishing schools when all of the guilty parties have already moved on?
