Duke vs. Arizona score, takeaways: No. 12 Wildcats shock No. 2 Blue Devils, make statement with early road win

No. 12 Arizona upset No. 2 Duke 78-73 on Friday in the first marquee matchup of the 2023-24 college basketball season.

Former North Carolina guard Caleb Love knocked down a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left and had a steal on the Blue Devils' attempt at a last shot to seal the win. Love finished with 11 points in his first game back at Cameron Indoor Stadium, where he also had a big game on March 5, 2022, scoring 22 points for the Tar Heels to spoil the final home game for former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, the last time the Blue Devils lost at home.

Arizona's upset victory was the first defeat at home for Duke coach Jon Scheyer, who is in his second-year as coach of the Blue Devils (1-1) and gave Duke its first nonconference loss at home since a 83-68 loss to Illinois on Dec. 8, 2020.

The Wildcats (2-0) led for a majority of the game before Duke rallied back late to take a 69-67 lead with 1:08 remaining off a Kyle Filipowski layup. Arizona forward Keshad Johnson scored an old-fashioned 3-point play on a layup with 47 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats the lead back for good. The Wildcats forward finished with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds.

Filipowski scored a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds while playing in foul trouble for a majority of the second half.

The Blue Devils' next game is against No. 4 Michigan State on Tuesday, while the Wildcats host Southern on Monday.

Arizona shows complete team effort in win

For the second time in two games, all five Arizona starters scored in double-figures. That stat may not seem like much considering how early it is in the season, but it speaks volumes on how the Wildcats plan to play this season.

They're going to beat you with depth.

Love is the ultimate microwave player. Surely, Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd knew this when he went out and recruited him from the transfer portal. He's truly one of the double-edged sword players in the sport for his ability to be clutch down the stretch but simultaneously hurt you because of his bad shot selection and turnovers. Love turned it over a team high six times in the win.

The Wildcats don't need Love to average 20 points per game to be successful. They have players like Oumar Ballo who's the favorite to win Pac-12 Player of the Year and guards such as Pelle Larsson and Kylan Boswell who can be glue guys for a Final Four team. You also can't forget about Johnson, the San Diego State transfer who was active on the defensive end and scored when it mattered. Arizona has arguably the toughest nonconference schedule in America. The win over the Blue Devils was by no means a fluke. It just solidifies what we already knew about the Wildcats — they're going to beat you with elite depth.

Duke needs more from Tyrese Proctor

The Blue Devils are one of the more experienced teams in the country. They returned four starters from a team that won the ACC title and the new player joining the starting lineup is former five-star guard Jared McCain, who was the crown jewel of Duke's 2023 recruiting class.

In big games and big moments, they need experienced players such as Proctor to meet the moment. On Friday, he simply didn't.

Proctor returned to school to improve his NBA Draft stock. He's an excellent facilitator and playing less off-ball suits his play style more. He finished with five assists and three turnovers and was fine (outside of the turnovers) in that department. His scoring was the concern. Proctor finished with eight points on 3-of-9 shooting and went 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. Duke as a team shot 34.8% on 23 attempts. That mark will have to be better if the Blue Devils expect to beat elite teams such as Arizona this season.

It's very, very early. We are two games into a 35+ game season (for the good teams). Proctor will have plenty of time to prove himself going forward and he certainly isn't the only one to blame. If the Blue Devils want to reach their ceiling of a national title contender, it starts with Proctor taking the leap most people assumed he would make in his second season.

More Top 25 games, please

Without sounding like a broken record from what CBS Sports Matt Norlander wrote earlier this week, college basketball needs more games like this, part of a home-and-home series — not games at a neutral site in front of a half-empty NBA arena and not an in-season tournament that's located thousands of miles from where a school is located. Kudos to Scheyer and Lloyd for making it happen and their commitment to continue to do just that.

There's nothing like a college home crowd because they can provide one of the biggest home field/court advantages in all of sports. Would this game have been interesting if it was played at a neutral site? Of course! Did it add to the intrigue that Love played in front of a packed hostile crowd at Cameron Indoor Stadium after playing multiple games as a North Carolina Tar Heel? Absolutely.

Résumés matter come March. The benefit college basketball has (as opposed to the current College Football Playoff format) is programs get rewarded with strong résumés and early season losses won't keep you off the bubble. Despite both coaches being relatively new in running their respective program, they're setting the standard for the rest of college basketball.

Noteworthy

  • Arizona recorded its first road win over an opponent ranked No. 1 or No. 2 for the first since 2001. In that season, the Wildcats went to Palo Alto, California, and upset No. 1 Stanford
  • Roach became the 22nd player in Duke program history in the 21st century to record 1,000 career points
  • Arizona won despite turning the ball over 17 times, but Duke only managed 18 points off those turnovers. The Wildcats forced 14 turnovers on the other end.

Arizona pulls off the upset

Final: No. 12 Arizona 78, No. 2 Duke 73

It just had to be Caleb Love that broke the hearts of Duke fans, again. Love hit two critical free throws with 4.6 left and recorded a steal on the other end on the Blue Devils' final shot attempt to seal the upset win. Arizona handed Jon Scheyer his first home loss of his career as Duke's coach and it snapped a 17-game home win streak that dated back to the 2021-22 season when Love and UNC beat the Blue Devils in Coach K's final home game.

All five starters scored in double-figures for Arizona. Kylan Boswell scored 12 points and added eight rebounds and five assists in the win. Arizona guard Pelle Larsson knocked down a pair of free throws in the final moments to maintain its three-point advantage. The Wildcats have one of the most difficult nonconference schedules in the country and this is certainly something to build off of heading into the gauntlet.

Can Duke get Tyrese Proctor going?

Mid 2H: No. 12 Arizona 60, No. 2 Duke 59

One of the biggest storylines heading into the season was could Proctor make a giant leap? With him playing less off-ball this season, the creation opportunities are there, he just hasn't been aggressive enough to take advantage. Proctor just knocked down a catch-and-shoot corner three-pointer to cut Arizona's lead to one.

Ballo pacing the Wildcats

Mid 2H: No. 12 Arizona 60, No. 2 Duke 54

Feeding Oumar Ballo appears to be a good plan if Duke continues to play an undersized lineup. With Filipowski in foul trouble, the Wildcats are attacking the rim and going right at the star big man. Mitchell picked up his second foul on an aggressive finish by Ballo to stretch the Wildcats lead to six.

Sean Stewart making an immediate impact

Mid 2H: No. 12 Arizona 54, No. 2 Duke  54

Duke freshman Sean Stewart checked into the game for the first time tonight and immediately made an impact. The No. 22 overall player from the 2023 recruiting cycle by 247Sports grabbed a pair of rebounds and scored on the other end during his first minute of action. Duke took its first lead at 54-52 since late in the first half after Stewart's layup. With Filipowski heading to the bench with his third foul, Stewart appears to be the man that's going to step up off the bench.

Filipowski off to a hot start in the second half

Early 2H: No. 12 Arizona 48, No. 2 Duke 44

Filipowski is off to a hot start in second half. The Duke big man scored seven points in the first four minutes and has game-high 18 points. The Blue Devils have forced 11 turnovers so far as a team, but Arizona is taking advantage on the glass on both ends. The Wildcats are attacking Duke inside and going right at Filipowski, who has two fouls. Speaking of foul trouble, Johnson is playing with three fouls. He's done a little bit of everything for the Wildcats so far tonight.

Wildcats lead at the break

Halftime: No. 12 Arizona 41, No. 2 Duke 33

After 20 minutes in Durham, North Carolina, Arizona is in control. The Wildcats are paced by nine points and four rebounds from Kylan Boswell and seven points and six rebounds from San Diego State transfer Keshad Johnson. After Duke took a 25-23 lead with 5:54 left, the Wildcats ended the first half on a 18-8 run. Caleb Love ended the first half with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to extend Arizona's lead to its largest of the night.

Duke's Kyle Filipowski has a game-high 11 points and four rebounds in 12 minutes. Filipowski picked up his second foul early in the first half and Jon Scheyer elected to be cautious with his star big man. The Blue Devils are shooting 2-for-12 from beyond the arc and 13-for-32 from the floor. Both numbers will have to improve for Duke to get back on track in the second half of play.

Arizona cleaning up on the offensive glass

Late 1H: No. 12 Arizona 31, No. 2 Duke 28

Arizona's size appears to hurting Duke early. The Blue Devils elected to go with a smaller starting lineup with three guards, one forward and a big man and the Wildcats are cleaning up on the offensive glass because of it. Arizona has 10 offensive rebounds through the first 16 minutes, while Duke has zero.

Ballo is heading to the bench after he picked up his second foul. The Wildcats, ironically, are going with a smaller lineup against Duke at the moment.

Coach K back at Cameron Indoor Stadium

Mid 1H: No. 12 Arizona 19, No. 2 Duke 16

One of the more notable developments outside of the actual game is former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski being back inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. Krzyzewski has only made one other in-person appearance to watch Duke since his retirement at the end of the 2021-22 season.

As for on the court, Arizona guard Pelle Larsson has only logged five minutes of action due to foul trouble. Larsson picked up two quick fouls and has been on the bench since. Filipowski also has two fouls, but Duke coach Jon Scheyer is electing to keep his star big man in.

Mid 1H: No. 12 Arizona 12, No. 2 Duke 12

Mitchell is seeing his first action this season and he is the leading scorer at the second media timeout with five points. UNC transfer Caleb Love has played all eight minutes so far and has yet to hit a shot. As a team, Arizona has five turnovers, which is something to monitor the rest of the way.

Quick start for Arizona

Early 1H: No. 12 Arizona 6, No. 2 Duke 6

We are underway from Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Wildcats are already off to a hot start. Arizona started the game by winning the tip and Kylan Boswell immediately passed it up to CBS Sports Pac-12 preseason Player of the Year Oumar Ballo for a quick flush. This is expected to be a physical battle between Ballo and Duke big man Kyle Filipowski and both players have a foul a piece in the opening minutes. Both players will need to stay out of foul trouble to help their respective team.

Duke's Mark Mitchell active

After missing the season opener against Dartmouth with an ankle injury, Duke forward Mark Mitchell will be available for Friday's game against Arizona. Mitchell averaged 9.1 points and 4.5 rebounds and started in 35 games last season. The Blue Devils will replace big man Ryan Young with Mitchell in the starting lineup.

Marquee nonconference matchups should be the norm

The biggest and best matchup of the first week of the men's college basketball season will go down Friday at 7 p.m. ET and arguably the best part is where the game will be played. It won't be staged inside a spottily attended NBA arena or tip off in some far-flung gym in a warm locale. This one's going to be on campus, in a packed basketball cathedral, a sparkling matchup between two teams with rosters capable of winning the 2024 NCAA title. -- Matt Norlander

Duke vs. Arizona pick

Love is an X-factor if Arizona wants to pull off a road upset over the Blue Devils. He's truly a microwave-type player that can rattle off 20 points on any given half. Love is a double-edged sword because he's also a candidate on any given night to shoot poorly from the floor and turn the ball over at a high rate. The Blue Devils went 16-0 at home last season under coach Jon Scheyer and have a key blend of veteran experience and youth on the roster. Duke makes a statement in the first big matchup of the season by covering the spread with ease. Prediction: Duke -5

Caleb Love returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium

The biggest storyline heading into this showdown is Arizona guard Caleb Love making his return to Cameron Indoor Stadium to face the Blue Devils. Love scored 28 points in UNC's 2022 Final Four win over Duke that ended the legendary career of former coach Mike Krzyzewski.

After the 2022-23 season concluded, Love entered the transfer portal and originally committed to Michigan, but did not have the adequate amount of transferable credits to easily clear the admissions bar at the school. Love scored 12 points in his first action with the Wildcats in a 122-59 blowout victory over Morgan State earlier this week.
