Matt Carlino is off to yet another destination.
The BYU junior is leaving the school, seeking transfer to one more university with one year left of eligibility. Brigham Young announced the transfer Tuesday evening. Carlino is on track to graduate this spring from BYU, meaning he'll qualify as a one-year graduate student transfer. He will not have to sit out next season.
He'll also be one of the most coveted transfers on the market.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity coach Rose and his staff have given me,” Carlino said in a statement. “I’m also grateful for my teammates, professors and advisors for making my time at BYU such a great experience and for helping me grow so much as a person. Thank you to the fans that have given me so much support. I feel very blessed that I was able to represent BYU.”
Carlino originally was an Indiana commit coming out of high school, Arcadia, Ariz. He eventually switched to UCLA. But then opted to leave UCLA before ever playing a game there, enrolling at BYU in 2010. Carlino averaged 13.7 points and 4.3 assists this past season.
“We’re really grateful for Matt’s contribution to the success of our program over the last three years,” Cougars coach Dave Rose said. “We wish Matt and his family the very best in their future endeavors. Matt was a great teammate and will be missed by the coaching staff and players.”
BYU went 23-12 this season and fell as a No. 10 seed in the Round of 64 to Oregon. BYU notes Carlino leaves as a top-10 player in assists, steals and 3-pointers.
