Buffalo has fired head coach Jeff Quinn.

"It is with great disappointment that we have to make this change," UB athletics director Danny White said Monday evening. "Unfortunately, the performance on the field this season and over Coach Quinn's tenure has not matched our expectations for the growth of Bulls football.

"On behalf of UB Athletics, I thank Jeff for his service to the University and to the football program. Jeff and his wife, Shannon, have been great supporters of the University at Buffalo.  We wish them well in their future pursuits."

Quinn, the former offensive coordinator under Brian Kelly at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan and Cincinnati, was hired to replace Turner Gill in 2010 after Gill took the Kansas job. In four-and-a-half seasons under Quinn, the Bulls have a 20-36 record with just one bowl appearance, reaching the Idaho Potato Bowl in 2013.

Buffalo is off to a 3-4 start to its 2014 campaign, including a 37-27 loss at Eastern Michigan on Saturday that likely led to Quinn's dismissal.

The Bulls will have this week off to address the situation and try to rebound in the second half of the season. Offensive coordinator Alex Wood has been named the interim head coach.

"With the bye week, our coaches and student-athletes have an opportunity to evaluate themselves and make the changes needed to improve," White said.  "We have some very talented and hard-working student athletes on this team and we hope this change shifts the course of the 2014 season."

Buffalo is back in action on Oct. 25 against Central Michigan.
