An arrest report from the Gainesville Police Department says that McCoy and his girlfriend were on a scooter at 3 a.m. Friday when they were hit by a 2011 Honda Civic. Both McCoy and his girlfriend were thrown from the scooter and taken to Shands Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
McCoy's father, Tony McCoy, posted an update about his son, as well as a couple photos, on his Facebook page.
"At 3 am this morning my wife and I received a call from the Trauma unit at Shands Hospital informing us that our son TJ had been in a hit and run accident and was found on the side of the road," wrote McCoy. "It turned out that a drunk driver hit TJ and his girlfriend at a stop light after they left the library and fled the scene. With little information and declaring VICTORY, my family and I headed to Gainesville. Seems like, within minutes after we received the call, his Offensive Line coach was in the hospital with him keeping us updated."
The younger McCoy also updated his status on Facebook.
As for the driver of the vehicle that struck McCoy and his girlfriend, Samantha Meldrem, 22, was arrested after fleeing the scene. Police found her vehicle with clear damage to the hood and bumper, as well as a broken windshield. According to the GPD, Meldrem had been drinking before the accident.
McCoy transferred to Florida from NC State following the 2015 season and started the final four games of the 2016 campaign.
