Georgia vs. Auburn score, takeaways: No. 1 Dawgs rally late as Brock Bowers steps up to preserve win streak

College football's longest winning streak nearly came to a stunning end Saturday before No. 1 Georgia rallied to edge rival Auburn 27-20 in the 128th edition of the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. Playing its first true road game of the season, UGA fell behind 10-0 in the first half and trailed 17-10 in the third quarter before piecing together three consecutive scoring drives with the game hanging in the balance.

The Bulldogs mustered their first lead of the game on a 38-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring with 10:57 remaining, but the 20-17 edge didn't last long. Auburn kicker Alex McPherson made a 42-yard field goal with 6:21 remaining to tie the game at 20-20 and put the UGA offense under pressure.

It responded with a quick touchdown -- a 40-yard connection between Carson Beck and star tight end Brock Bowers to pull the Bulldogs ahead 27-20. UGA's defense stiffened from there, and a Malaki Starks interception in the final two minutes put the game on ice.

Georgia's early 10-0 hole marked the first time since coach Kirby Smart's first season in 2016 that UGA faced a double-digit deficit in consecutive SEC games. Much like they did in a 24-14 Week 3 comeback victory against South Carolina, the Bulldogs stayed composed even with aspirations of another undefeated season hanging in the balance.

Beck finished 23 of 33 passing for 313 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Bowers finished with eight catches for 157 yards and the all-important go-ahead score.

Bowers' Heisman moment?

Considering it's never happened in the game's modern era, the odds of a tight end winning the Heisman Trophy are slim. But if anyone in the 21st century could make a case for consideration, it's Bowers. After racking up 119 receptions for national-title winning teams over his first two seasons, the versatile playmaker bailed his team out against Auburn and has 24 receptions over the last three games.

Bowers entered halftime with just two catches for 9 yards before coming alive with an electric fourth quarter. Of his 158 yards receiving, 121 came in the fourth quarter, and one of his best catches was actually wiped off due to a penalty. His final three grabs came with the Bulldogs either facing second-and-long or third-and-long.

With seven more receiving receiving touchdowns, Bowers will match Terrence Edwards for Georgia's all-time scoring record (30). Bowers moved into a tie for second with A.J. Green with his performance against Auburn.

Auburn's game plan

Auburn entered as a 14.5-point underdog but opened up a 10-point lead behind a run-heavy game plan that frustrated Georgia's defense. Though the Tigers continued playing two quarterbacks -- Payton Thorne and Robby Ashford -- first-year coach Hugh Freeze relied heavily on Thorne, who is regarded as the prototypical pocket passer; however, he turned into a runner against Georgia with 92 yards on the ground.

Thorne finished with three runs of at least 10 yards, including a 61-yard scamper in the first quarter to set up a field goal. With Thorne keeping the football on run-pass option plays and the Tigers finding sporadic success in the traditional run game, Auburn ended the game with 43 runs against just 20 pass attempts.

Auburn's two rushing touchdowns ended Georgia's streak of 35 straight games without allowing multiple rushing scores, the longest streak by any FBS team since 2000. The Tigers also snapped Georgia's streak of 65 games without allowing an opponent to surpass 200 yards rushing, which was the longest such streak since Ohio State went 78 games between 2001 and 2007.

Beck's validation

Having Bowers at his disposal certainly helped, but Beck's coolness under pressure in the second half stood out in the fourth-year junior's first career road start. The performance began in rocky fashion on a first-quarter interception after missing an open Oscar Delp down the middle of the field one play earlier. That miscue gave Auburn a short field, and the Tigers promptly scored to surge ahead 10-0.

From there, Beck was mostly lights out. Georgia's three straight scoring drives in the second half covered 98, 71 and 75 yards inside a hostile environment as Beck completed 10 of his final 12 passes. It was a validating performance for Beck, who waited his turn behind predecessor Stetson Bennett IV while mostly seeing mop-up duty over the past three seasons.

Further helping Beck's cause was the return of Ladd McConkey, Georgia's diminutive slot weapon who missed the season's first four games due to injury. The shifty veteran caught four passes for 38 yards and is expected to be a heavy factor in the Bulldogs' passing game moving forward.

Big moment for UGA

Final: Georgia 27, Auburn 20

Malaki Starks intercepted Payton Thorne on fourth-and-9 near midfield to seal Georgia's victory. The Bulldogs have trailed by double-digits in both their SEC games to begin the season but have remained poised and come back to win both games. This was a huge game for quarterback Carson Beck in terms of solidifying his place as a clutch player and the type of leader capable of taking his team to a win in a hostile environment. Brock Bowers was massive, and the defense stiffened when necessary.

Brock Bowers

Perhaps the Brock Bowers Heisman Trophy campaign is far-fetched. But this second half is a Heisman-worthy performance from the elite tight end. He's just scored a 40-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs ahead 27-20 with 2:52 remaining. Big answer from the 'Dawgs offense, which has come alive with three consecutive scores. Bowers is up to 157 yards on eight receptions.

Tie game

Alex McPherson drills a clutch field goal from 42 yards to cap a 51-yard drive that ties the game at 20-20 with 6:21 remaining. Tigers actually utilized the forward pass on that possession and have put the pressure back on UGA's offense to deliver on the road. The ensuing possession could be a defining moment of the 'Dawgs three-peat dreams.

Georgia takes its first lead

10:57 Q4: No. 1 Georgia 20, Auburn 17

The Bulldogs have taken their first lead of the day thanks to a 38-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring. Tight end Brock Bowers proved why he is the best non-quarterback in college football with back-to-back one-handed catches to get the Bulldogs into Tiger territory and in field goal range.

Crucial penalty

What would have been a second consecutive one-handed catch from Brock Bowers was wiped out by a penalty, which set Georgia behind the chains. As a result, the Dawgs were forced into a fourth-and-5 at the 20. Kirby Smart opted to take the points, and Peyton Woodring nailed a 38-yarder to put UGA up 20-17 with 10:57 remaining.

Big stop

Georgia's defense comes up with a huge stand, forcing a second consecutive Auburn punt for the first time today as a host of defenders led by Nazir Stackhouse converged to stop Jarquez Hunter for a loss of four on third-and-short. Georgia gets it back and is already in business.

Tied going to the fourth

START Q4: No. 1 Georgia 17, Auburn 17

The Bulldogs' 98-yard scoring drive to tie it up near the end of the third quarter included 45 rushing yards and culminated with a 13-yard scoring scamper from Daijun Edwards. They are starting to wear down an Auburn defense that has been rock solid this year, and it'll be interesting to see what changes the Tigers make after the break. The momentum is back on the side of the red and black, which will be looking to stop Auburn on third-and-5 as the team switch sides.

Statement drive

10 plays and 98 yards over 4:24. That's a statement drive from the two-time defending national champions with their backs against the wall on the road in a rivalry game. Daijun Edwards finished the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run as the Tigers' defense appeared to fatigue with the Bulldogs marching the football down the field. A 29-yard hookup between Carson Beck and Brock Bowers helped set up the score.

Moving the ball

After being pinned against their own goal-line, the Bulldogs are moving the football. Beck just hit Rara Thomas for a 14-yard gain on third-and-5 to keep the chains moving. Of note: Thomas was gimpy after the play and left the field limping.

Missed opportunity for the Tigers

Auburn's attempt to make it a two-score game stalled on the Georgia 42-yard line after a huge drop from Auburn wide receiver Malcolm Johnson Jr. Quarterback Payton Thorne used his legs to get the Tigers started on the 10-play drive, but Johnson dropped a beautiful back-shoulder fade that would have given the Tigers a first down on third-and-16. Oscar Chapman pinned Georgia deep on their own two-yard line though.

Huge sack

Auburn was deep into its bag and driving yet again when Smael Mondon came on a second-down blitz and sacked Payton Thorne for a loss of seven. That set the Tigers in a must-pass situation, and Malcom Johnson Jr. couldn't quite bring it in on the right sideline. Good throw by Thorne. Huge couple of plays there from the UGA defense, first from Mondon and then from Daylen Everette at corner to help break up the pass on third-and-long.

Deep shot

Interesting decision by Carson Beck/Mike Bobo and the Georgia offense to take a deep shot on third-and-3 near midfield. The pass missed and Georgia opted to punt instead of going for it. The deep shot in that situation makes sense if you're going to run another play and give yourself a second shot at converting. But it's easy to second guess that call when you're going to turn around and play it safe with the punt.

Fumble overturned

Daijun Edwards appeared to fumble, and it was ruled Auburn's football on the field. It would have made two turnovers on two consecutive plays for the Georgia offense. But the call was overturned, averting an absolute disaster for the Bulldogs.

Auburn re-gains the lead

13:31 Q3: Auburn 17, No. 1 Georgia 10

Auburn recovered and Oscar Delp fumble on the first play of the second half, and promptly cashed it in for six. Dual-threat weapon Robby Ashford took off for 18 yards on the Tigers' first play, Jarquez Hunter gained five more and then Ashford finished the three-play drive off with an eight-yard scamper. If Georgia is going to continue to give Auburn good field position, the Tigers' might not need to find that balance mentioned below.

Costly mistake

Georgia now trails the turnover battle 2-0 after Oscar Delp fumbled on UGA's first offensive play of the second half, leading to an Auburn score. The Bulldogs just aren't buttoned up today, and this feels like it could become their Missouri moment if they don't get it together quickly. The Mizzou game was a surprising road test for this team early last season that came down to the wire. This one may, too.

Georgia's keys

Carson Beck needs to hit a deep shot to open up Georgia's offense. He attempted to find tight ends Oscar Delp and Brock Bowers down the field at times in the first half, but the Bulldogs' only passing play of more than 13 yards went to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint for 26 yards. It's no coincidence that completion came on a scoring drive for UGA. Defensively, the Bulldogs need to get better at setting the edge against the Tigers, who've had success running the football outside the tackles.

Auburn's keys

The Tigers have to find balance on offense. That isn't exactly deep analysis since they've run six passing plays opposed to 27 rushing plays. Georgia was already selling out against the run in the first half, and there's no doubt that it will remain the case during the final 30 minutes. Defensively, the pressure has to get home. Carson Beck made some solid throws with pressure in his face, and the Tigers have to keep testing him and landing a few of those haymakers.

Georgia and Auburn knotted at the break

HALF: No. 1 Georgia 10, Auburn 10

Well, not many people expected this. Auburn jumped out to a two-touchdown lead at home against the two-time reigning national champions due in large part to a punishing rushing attack. Quarterback Payton Thorne had a 61-yarder on a designed run to set up Jarquez Hunter's plunge that pushed it to a two-score lead. Thorne's 61-yard run was the longest of his career and the longest by an Auburn QB since Malik Willis in 2017 (67 yards) vs. Mississippi State.

Auburn has 145 rushing yards after two quarters, and its offensive line has had plenty of success against the stout Georgia defensive front. The problem is that Thorne is only 4 of 6 for 28 yards through the air, and Georgia's defense will certainly make some adjustments at the half to force him into some uncomfortable throws.

Georgia has been pretty conservative offensively as well. Carson Beck, who is making his first career road start, is 7 of 13 for 77 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. The offensive juice has come from Daijun Edwards, who has 40 yards on 13 carries and the Bulldogs' lone score. Georgia's offensive backfield has been hurt by some injuries, and wide receiver Dillon Bell has moved into a backup role behind Edwards.

Odd decision-making

Auburn turned the ball over on downs at the Georgia 12-yard line ... and it could have easily been avoided. Some thoughts ...

  • Robby Ashford came in at quarterback in the red zone and promptly got the Tigers in the shadow of the goal post.
  • Payton Thorne -- who can run but isn't a the dual-threat weapon that Ashford is -- came in on third-and-1 in place of Ashford. Auburn didn't convert.
  • Then, on fourth-and-1, coach Hugh Freeze decided to go for it instead of taking a three-point lead late in the second quarter.

That could turn out to be a massive sequence when all is said and done.

Georgia avoids hurt after no call

Payton Thorne crossed the line of scrimmage on a second-down play before retreating and hitting Camden Brown for a gain of 14 yards to help Auburn jumpstart a big drive. Gene Steratore confirmed on the CBS broadcast that it should have been an illegal pass, but there was no call. Ultimately, UGA stuffed Auburn on a fourth-and-1 play near the 10-yard line. Had the Tigers scored on that series, Georgia fans would rightfully have been incensed over the missed call.

Auburn's defensive backs are playing well, Georgia settles for three

5:57 Q2: No. 1 Georgia 10, Auburn 10

The Tiger secondary has been a work-in-progress all season, due in large part to minor injuries from multiple players. However, on the last drive that resulted in a Georgia field goal, Zion Puckett broke up a would-be touchdown to Brock Bowers and Jaylin Simpson prevented a touchdown on third-and-goal from the 11-yard line. That resulted in a 37-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring that tied it up. That might be considered a net win for the Tigers though. They bent ... but didn't break.

Defending Bowers

Carson Beck had Brock Bowers in 1-on-1 coverage at the left pylon on second-and-10, but Zion Puckett broke it up. Beck went back to Bowers on third down but nothing was there. Thus, Georgia settled for a game-tying 37-yard field goal. Good looking kick from Peyton Woodring as the Bulldogs quickly erase the early 10-0 deficit.

Standing strong

Georgia's defense responded by forcing a three-and-out after being carved up on Auburn's last two possessions. The Dawgs appear to be loading up against the run to force Auburn's offense to throw the football. The Tigers have run the football 16 times and thrown it just four. That formula will likely be unsustainable.

Auburn's defense can't lock down

11:49 Q2: Auburn 10, No. 1 Georgia 7

Auburn needed a big defensive stand on that drive, and it simply didn't happen. Georgia went 56 yards and 11 plays en route to a Daijun Edwards touchdown run. That was one of the first times all season that the defense didn't buckle down when the Tigers needed it the most. Defensive coordinator Ron Roberts brought pressure from a variety of different spots, but it never landed on Bulldog quarterback Carson Beck -- who was money under duress.

Georgia answers

This was Georgia's fourth time trailing by 10 or more points after the first quarter under Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs lost the first three games. But they just came up with a big answer as Daijun Edwards scored on a 2-yard run to make it 10-7. The big play on this drive came when Carson Beck found Rara Thomas for a 10-yard completion on third-and-7. He bobbled it but came down with it to keep the drive alive.

Auburn up 10-0 after one

Adjustments needed

Georgia's run defense is befuddled by Payton Thorne keeping the football so frequently. Robby Ashford is regarded as Auburn's running quarterback, but Thorne is making gains with his feet. Jarquez Hunter finished off that scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers an early 10-0 edge. The Bulldogs' ability to make in-game defensive adjustments will be tested in this contest.

Punishing drive for Auburn

2:00 Q1: Auburn 10, No. 1 Georgia 0

Jarquez Hunter plunged in from five yards out to cap off a 7-play, 48-yard touchdown drive. It was old-school football for the Tigers. Six of Auburn's seven plays on the drive were runs, including a quarterback-keeper by Payton Thorne on fourth-and-2 on the same play Auburn called when Thorne went 61 yards earlier this half. The offensive line is playing better than it has all season. Jordan-Hare Stadium is rocking. This is a huge drive for Auburn's defense against Bulldog quarterback Carson Beck -- who is making his first career road start.

Jaylin Simpson's fourth of the year

Auburn defensive back Jaylin Simpson has been a monster this season, and he just ripped away an interception near midfield to set the Tigers up in good field position. The defense hasn't been an issue for coach Hugh Freeze, and it's imperative that Thorne and Co. get short fields. Otherwise, it's going to be a long game.

Carson Beck's rough start

On first down, Beck had tight end Oscar Delp wide open down the middle. He just had to drop the football in over the head of a trailing linebacker. But the the throw missed Delp about a yard left and fell incomplete. On the next play, Beck threw an interception. If he hit Delp, the Bulldogs are likely setting up shop in the red zone. Instead, Auburn has the football at midfield with a 3-0 lead. Rought start for Beck and the Georgia offense.
