2022 Farmers Insurance Open leaderboard: Will Zalatoris tied for Round 3 lead, aims for first Tour win

Saturday's final round of the Farmers Insurance Open will put one of the game's young stars squarely in the spotlight, as 25-year-old Will Zalatoris will play in the final group while seeking his first PGA Tour victory. The 2021 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year inserted himself into contention for Saturday's final round by going 7 under on Friday to surge past names such as Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas.

Rahm and Thomas were tied for the lead at -13 with Adam Schenk entering Friday's action. The trio played together in the final pairing, but ran into hiccups that opened the door Zalatoris and Jason Day to creep up the leaderboard to tie for first at -14. Rahm shot an even-par 72, but was +2 on his back nine after making the turn with the lead. He double-bogeyed the 10th hole and never generated momentum after that, finishing the day at -13 and one shot off the lead. Thomas fired a 1-over 73, while Schenk shot a 75.

In addition to Zalatoris, Day and Maverick McNealy both shot 65 to stand out during Friday's action. McNealy's 65 was highlighted by an ace and put him at -11 for the event -- among a group of 12 players within three shots of the lead. Cameron Young had the day's best round with a 64, but he remains on the outskirts of contention at just -8 for the event. Dustin Johnson is among a group of six players at -10 that could also produce a contender in Saturday's final round. He recovered nicely from a double bogey on the 14th by birdieing two of his final four holes.

But the day truly belonged to Zalatoris, who finished tied for sixth at The American Express just two weeks ago. He holed out from 39 yards away for eagle on the second hole and never looked back as he completed a bogey-free day with four straight pars while the others around him scuffled. In the end, he was left in a tie for the lead as the final group walked off the 18th.

Wrapping up

The Saturday spotlight will belong to Will Zalatoris, who after firing a 65 today is atop the leaderboard alongside Jason Day, who shot a very quiet 67 today to put himself in a tie for the lead entering the final round. Rahm and JT will be in contention -- perhaps even the favorites still -- but there are going to be over a dozen guys who feel like they have a shot at this thing tomorrow, and it should be a lot of fun.

Solo lead for Will Zalatoris

It's almost a guarantee that Will Zalatoris will be in the final group for Saturday's final round. The young gun now sits atop the leaderboard at -14 following a Justin Thomas bogey. Today's final pairing of Rahm, JT and Adam Schenk is now collectively +4 for the day. Rahm is back to even for the day with JT, but Schenk is +4 for the day.

Zalatoris is home

Will Zalatoris posts a 65 that could have been even lower if a few make-able putts had fallen. He is tied for the lead with JT at -14. JT, Tringale, Day, Rai and Rahm are still on the course with a chance to shake things up, but there's a really good chance that Zalatoris will be in the final pairing tomorrow with an opportunity to get his first PGA Tour victory.

Rahm's struggles

Jon Rahm is +3 through four holes on the back nine and just pared the par-5 No. 13. He's still just two off the lead but isn't having the greatest day.

Double bug

Dustin Johnson also records a double bogey within just a couple of minutes of the Rahm double that caused a change atop the leaderboard. DJ responds magnificently, though, and will birdie No. 15 after sticking one from 147 yards out. He's been all over the place today but is -2 on the day and -9 for the event.

Lead change + Berger's day

Big yikes for Jon Rahm on No. 10 as he doubles and cedes the lead to Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris, who are at -14. Unrelated....n typical Daniel Berger fashion, he quietly put together a very nice third round to be on the edge of striking distance after beginning the day nine strokes off the lead. He started on the front and just finished on No. 9 with a par for a 4-under 68. That puts him at -9 and in the mix after a T-5 at the Sentry a couple weeks ago.

What a turn

Big 40-foot breaker up the hill on the 9th, and Justin Thomas just drains it. Dead center as he gets back to -14 and makes the turn at -1 for the day. Then Rahm follows by draining a 38-footer to stay one stroke ahead. Sheesh. Might be seeing them together again tomorrow. Incredible putting sequence.

Farmer's Insurance Open Friday reset

As coverage of the third round (yes, this is the THIRD round) moves to CBS, here is a quick reset of where things stand. JT just dropped a shot and is back to even on the day, leaving Rahm alone atop the leaderboard at -14. He's got JT, red-hot Will Zalatoris and Cameron Tringale right behind him at -13. Otherwise, Aaron Rai, Jason Day and Sepp Straka (-5 through 16!) are some of the day's big movers. Justin Rose started hot but has cooled off and is with DJ and Scheffler in the group at -9. Tons of guys in contention, including some big names.

Zalatoris!

After short siding himself on the par 3 11th, Will Zalatoris was going to give one back, right? RIGHT? I mean, come on. This was truly ridiculous. What's the up-and-down rate from this spot? Can't be more than 10%, and he nearly holed it. When you're hot, you're hot.

Will Zalatoris on fire

Will Zalatoris finished T-6 at the American Express and is following up with a pristine third round to put himself in contention for his first-ever PGA Tour victory. He's rattled off three straight birdies and is within one stroke of the lead through 10. A Rahm, Thomas, Zalatoris final group tomorrow would be something. Just saying.
